Chapter 16 - The Midnight AuditThe digital clock on my desk read 2:14 AM. The warehouse was dead silent, save for the rhythmic humming of the industrial generators in the sub-basement.

Lucy, my father (who had insisted on joining us via wheelchair, refusing to stay behind in safety), and I stood huddled around a portable terminal in the logistics dispatch office.

"The security log shows the override came from terminal 7," Lucy whispered, her fingers flying across the laptop keyboard as she bypassed the firewall. "Which is physically located inside the private office of Chief Financial Officer Robert Vance—your uncle."

My breath caught in my throat. Uncle Robert. My father’s older brother, who had sat quietly on the board of directors for twenty years, nodding sympathetically at every meeting, offering gentle advice and fatherly pats on the shoulder whenever I faced a corporate crisis.

"Robert?" I whispered, shaking my head in denial. "No. Uncle Robert helped raise me after my mother passed away. He doesn't even care about day-to-day operations; he’s set to retire next month."

"Look at the data streams, Alexander," my father rasped, his voice rough but clear as he pointed a trembling finger at the monitor.

Lucy pulled up a series of encrypted ledger files recovered from terminal 7. The numbers painted a horrifying picture. For the past six years, Uncle Robert hadn't just been a passive board member—he was the mastermind behind the entire embezzlement scheme. He had used Marcus and Maya as pawns, feeding them the administrative override codes and directing the offshore shell companies, while positioning himself as the wise, untouchable elder statesman of the family.

"He set Maya and Marcus up to take the fall when the audit closed in," Lucy realized, her eyes widening in horror. "When you started poking around three years ago, Robert was the one who forged my signature to frame me. He knew you were too proud and stubborn to check the corporate routing numbers yourself."

The realization hit me with crushing force. I hadn't just been blind; I had been manipulated by the very blood in my veins.

"He’s liquidating the final real estate holdings tonight," Lucy said, watching the live transaction counter tick upward. "If those funds clear offshore by sunrise, your company is legally bankrupt, and Robert flies to Zurich as a multimillionaire retiree."

"Not if we stop him," I said, grabbing my heavy iron wrench from the workbench.
