Chapter 5 - The Master OverrideThe glowing green terminal text scrolled across Lucy’s makeshift screen in a dizzying waterfall of hexadecimal code. Above us, the muffled sound of heavy footsteps and shouting voices echoed through the ceiling tiles. Security had found the unconscious guard.

"They're sweeping sector B," I whispered, keeping my eyes glued to the dark corridor behind us, the heavy iron wrench gripped tightly in my sweating palm. "How much longer, Lucy?"

"Forty-five seconds," she replied, her face illuminated by the harsh glare of the laptop screen. Drops of sweat rolled down her temple. "Marcus implemented a multi-layered firewall when he took over the system accounts. He thinks he's a digital god."

"He’s a glorified spreadsheet monkey," I growled, peering into the gloom. "If we get locked out here, we’re finished."

Suddenly, a sharp, piercing alarm shrieked through the facility. Red strobe lights began to flash overhead, casting a bloody, rhythmic hue across the concrete walls.

SYSTEM ALERT: Unauthorized intrusion detected in Sub-Level 4. Facility lockdown initiated.

"Found it," Lucy whispered triumphantly. Her fingers hit the enter key with a definitive clack.

The terminal screen flashed bright green, displaying a massive, blinking prompt: MASTER OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.

"I'm locking down the offshore transfer protocols," Lucy said rapidly, her eyes darting across the scrolling data streams. "Freezing the Cayman accounts... blocking all secondary administrative overrides... and..." She paused, a slow, predatory smile spreading across her lips. "I’m transferring every remaining dollar in Maya and Marcus’s personal slush funds directly back into the primary corporate reserve."

"Do it," I snarled. "Wipe them out."

Transfer complete. Total balance restored: $14,250,000.

Before we could celebrate, the heavy steel door of the maintenance closet rattled violently. Someone was slamming against it from the outside, shouting commands.

"Open up! Security breach! Drop your weapons!"

"We’re trapped," I said, looking around the tiny, windowless closet.

Lucy didn't hesitate. She pointed up at the ceiling ventilation grate, which had been loosened by vibration from the HVAC unit above. "Give me a boost!"

I hoisted her up by the waist. She slammed her shoulder against the metal grate, snapping the rusted screws with a sharp crack, and wriggled her way into the dark ductwork above. Reaching down, she grabbed my outstretched hands and hauled me up just as the heavy steel door of the closet burst open with a deafening crash.

Flashlights swept the empty room below us as security guards swarmed inside, shouting in confusion. We crawled backward through the narrow, dust-choked metal tube, disappearing into the dark belly of the building just as the trap snapped shut behind us.
