Chapter 7 - The Press ConferenceThe lobby of Vance Luxury Enterprises downtown was blindingly bright, bathed in the harsh glare of television studio lights and a sea of flashing camera strobes. Dozens of reporters, microphones clutched in their hands like lances, crowded around the raised oak podium where Maya and Marcus stood side by side.

Maya was weeping hysterically into her handkerchief, putting on an Oscar-worthy performance of a devastated sister wronged by a mentally unstable brother.

"My poor brother, Alexander, has suffered a severe psychological break," Maya sobbed into a bank of microphones, her voice trembling with theatrical grief. "Over the last few years, his obsession with corporate expansion pushed him to the brink. Today, our company assets have been compromised by his erratic behavior, and we are doing everything in our power to salvage—"

"Save your breath, Maya," a cold, resonant voice echoed through the soaring marble lobby.

The crowd of reporters gasped and parted instantly, turning their cameras toward the glass revolving doors.

I stepped into the lobby, flanked by two federal agents in dark suits and local police detectives. Behind me walked Lucy, wheeling my father—wrapped in a clean woolen blanket, looking pale but alert—straight into the center of the room.

Maya’s face drained of all color, her jaw dropping open as if she had just seen a ghost rise from the grave. Marcus stepped in front of the podium, his face twisting into an ugly snarl of panic and rage.

"Security!" Marcus screamed, pointing a shaking finger at me. "Get these trespassers out of here! This man is unstable!"

"Don't move an inch, Mr. Vance," the lead federal agent commanded, flashing a gold badge directly in Marcus’s face. "Marcus Vance and Maya Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, interstate embezzlement, elder abuse, and attempted poisoning."

Chaos erupted in the lobby. Microphones surged forward like a tidal wave, shutters clicked like angry insects, and shouting reporters hurled questions over one another.

"Is this true, Mr. Vance?"

"Did you frame your ex-wife three years ago?"

"What is your father’s condition?"

Marcus lunged sideways toward a side exit, trying to make a break for the elevators, but two police officers tackled him effortlessly to the polished marble floor, slapping steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic snap.

Maya collapsed onto the floor behind the podium, wailing hysterically as her designer coat dragged through the dust, utterly dismantled in a matter of seconds.
