Chapter 18 - The Final FallThe struggle on the office floor was brief and brutal. Robert thrashed and cursed, his silver hair coming undone, his expensive suit wrinkling as Lucy pinned his arms against the carpet with cold, precise efficiency.

I stepped forward, reaching into the open floor safe behind the desk. I grabbed the master flash drive containing the encrypted ledger files and the physical paper trail of his six-year embezzlement ring.
"It's over, Uncle Robert," I said, my voice eerily calm as I slipped the flash drive into my pocket. "The federal marshals are waiting downstairs. Your retirement in Zurich has just been canceled."
Robert stopped struggling, sagging against the carpet, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as he glared up at me with pure venom. "You think prison can touch me, Alexander? I have judges in my pocket. I have political immunity!"
"Not against federal elder abuse, interstate fraud, and premeditated corporate poisoning," a cool voice echoed from the doorway.
Federal agents and local police detectives stepped out of the shadows of the hallway, flashlights gleaming off their badges as they strode into the office. The lead investigator walked straight up to Uncle Robert, hauled him roughly to his feet, and slapped steel handcuffs around his wrists with a definitive, satisfying click.
As Robert was dragged out of the office, shouting empty threats into the empty corridor, a profound silence settled over the room.
I turned around. My father sat in his wheelchair, breathing heavily, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. I walked over, dropping to one knee beside him, resting my head against his trembling, working hand.
"We won, Dad," I whispered. "It's finally over."

My father reached out with his one working hand, resting it gently on the back of my head, just as he used to do when I was a boy. Then, his gaze shifted past my shoulder.
I turned around. Lucy was standing by the window, watching the first rays of dawn break over the Chicago skyline. The golden morning light illuminated her face, washing away the shadows of the past three years.
