Instead, the sprawling, sunlit floor was filled with local woodworkers, independent metal smiths, family upholsterers, and lifelong friends who had survived the storm together.

I stood near the center of the showroom, wearing a simple flannel shirt, watching my father—now walking steadily with the aid of a quad cane—laughing with a group of retired craftsmen near the mahogany display tables.
Across the room, Lucy was deep in conversation with a young artisan, reviewing blueprints for our upcoming sustainable furniture line. She looked up, caught my eye across the crowded room, and offered a quiet, knowing smile.
I raised my coffee cup to her in a silent toast.
The luxury SUV parked outside in the underground garage was still mine. But as I stood there surrounded by real people, real work, and real truth, I finally understood something my money could never buy.
