Chapter 11 - The Ashes of an Empire

The silence inside my sprawling, minimalist penthouse office felt heavier than the damp air of the canal-side hovel. Three days had passed since the dramatic arrests of Maya and Marcus at corporate headquarters. The news channels had finally stopped looping footage of my sister weeping into her designer coat, and the federal investigators had packed up their temporary command desks from the executive floor.
I sat behind my massive mahogany desk, staring at a stack of quarterly audit reports. The numbers were staggering. Over the past three years, Marcus and Maya hadn't just embezzled two hundred thousand dollars; they had systematically hollowed out our supplier network, mortgaged three of our prime showroom real estate properties, and left behind a trail of fabricated debt with overseas vendors.
My phone buzzed on the blotter. It was Arthur, my father. His speech was still slurred, but when I visited him that morning, he had gripped my hand and whispered a single word: Rebuild.

I stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the glittering Chicago skyline. The luxury SUV parked in the subterranean garage downstairs no longer felt like a throne. It felt like a reminder of how easily arrogance blinds a man to reality.
The corporate board was scheduled to meet in twenty minutes to vote on my emergency reinstatement as CEO. But as I looked at my reflection in the glass, I knew I couldn't walk back into that boardroom the same person I had been before.
