CHAPTER 1 — The Man Everyone Thought Was Finished

The first time my fiancée called me useless, the ballroom echoed with laughter.

The second time, I smiled.

Not because it didn't hurt.

Because every cruel word was becoming evidence.

Crystal chandeliers illuminated my father's magnificent estate as hundreds of guests celebrated what they believed was my miraculous return home after a devastating car accident.

They thought I had survived.

They also believed I would never walk again.

A thick gray blanket covered my legs.

My wheelchair sat in the center of the ballroom like a throne built from pity.

Doctors, investors, politicians, distant relatives, executives, and lifelong family friends filled the room, pretending to celebrate my recovery while secretly measuring how much power I had lost.

Only three people knew the truth.

My doctor.

My lawyer.

And my head of security.

The accident had been real.

The broken spine had been a lie.

Every scan shown to the public had been carefully staged under legal supervision. My father and I wanted to know one thing before announcing my promotion as CEO.

Who loved me...

And who only loved my fortune.

No one knew they were being tested.

Especially Vanessa.

She entered the ballroom wearing a shimmering silver gown that looked expensive enough to buy a house. The engagement ring I had given her sparkled under the lights as though mocking me.

She didn't even kiss me.

Instead, she stood over my wheelchair with a smile colder than winter.

"Look at you," she laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear. "The mighty Alexander Hayes... reduced to dead weight."

Several guests laughed awkwardly.

No one objected.

No one looked uncomfortable.

Some even raised their champagne glasses.

That silence spoke louder than the insult.

I looked around the room.

My uncle Martin hid a satisfied smile behind his glass.

Daniel—my best friend since college—couldn't even meet my eyes.

Vanessa's mother folded her arms proudly, as if her daughter had just won a competition.

Vanessa leaned closer.

"I was going to marry the future king of Hayes Corporation."

She gently tapped my wheelchair.

"Instead, I got a man who can't even stand."

The room erupted with louder laughter.

I lowered my head just enough to appear humiliated.

Inside...

I memorized every face.

Every smile.

Every whisper.

Every betrayal.

Because hidden inside the flower arrangements, behind the paintings, and above the chandeliers...

Tiny cameras recorded everything.

Every confession.

Every insult.

Every conspiracy.

My security chief, Marcus, stood quietly near the entrance pretending to check invitations.

He gave me a tiny nod.

Everything was being captured.

Vanessa wasn't finished.

She crouched beside me so photographers could capture the "heartbroken fiancée comforting her disabled fiancé."

The moment the cameras flashed...

Her smile disappeared.

She whispered through clenched teeth.

"You've become worthless."

"You should cancel the wedding before you embarrass me."

Then she stood and loudly announced,

"I suppose I'll have to take care of him now."

The guests applauded.

What wonderful acting.

Only one person wasn't pretending.

Clara.

The quiet housemaid.

She hurried over after Vanessa accidentally kicked my blanket aside.

Without saying a word, Clara gently covered my legs again.

She looked into my eyes—not with pity...

But with respect.

"You still deserve kindness," she whispered softly.

Four simple words.

Yet they felt more sincere than everything Vanessa had said during our three-year relationship.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Careful, Clara," she sneered. "Don't fall in love with the cripple."

Laughter exploded again.

Clara lowered her head...

But refused to step away from me.

That's when I noticed something strange.

She looked terrified.

Not of Vanessa.

Of my uncle Martin.

Every time he glanced toward us...

Clara instinctively tightened her hands.

As if she already knew something she wasn't supposed to know.

I slowly turned toward Marcus.

He gave me another almost invisible nod.

The investigation was working.

The accident hadn't destroyed my life.

It had exposed everyone else's.

Then I looked directly at Vanessa.

And quietly asked,

"When exactly did you begin planning to steal my shares?"

The laughter died instantly.

Vanessa froze.

The color drained from her face.

Across the ballroom...

Clara suddenly closed her eyes.

As though she had been dreading that question for weeks.

She already knew the answer.

May you like

And judging by the fear in her expression...

The truth was far more dangerous than I imagined.
