CHAPTER 9 — Box 717 Changed Everything

For three days...
We disappeared.
No phones.
No credit cards.
No company offices.
Marcus moved us between abandoned safe houses while every news channel reported conflicting stories.
Some claimed my father had been kidnapped.
Others said I had staged an elaborate fraud.
Hayes Corporation's stock plummeted.
Exactly as our enemies had planned.
But they still hadn't found the one thing they wanted.
The brass key.
On the fourth night, Marcus drove us to a forgotten private bank hidden beneath an old stone building outside the city.
The vault manager looked at the key.
His expression changed instantly.
Without asking our names, he escorted us underground.
We stopped in front of a massive steel door.
BOX 717.
The manager unlocked it.
"I've been instructed to open this only if someone presents the original key."
He stepped away.
Inside the box...
There wasn't gold.
There wasn't cash.
There wasn't jewelry.
There were hard drives.
Paper files.
Original contracts.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
And one sealed envelope marked:
"To Alexander Hayes."
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter from my grandfather.
"If you are reading this, then I failed to stop them."
He confessed everything.
Thirty years earlier, four of the world's wealthiest families had secretly created an organization that manipulated corporations, judges, elections, and financial markets.
They destroyed competitors before anyone realized a war had begun.
When my grandfather discovered their crimes, he secretly copied every piece of evidence.
That evidence was now in my hands.
The fake debts.
The murders disguised as accidents.
The bribed officials.
The poisoned executives.
The names of every corrupt member.
Including...
Uncle Martin.
Vanessa's father.
Several government ministers.
International CEOs.
And one name that made my blood run cold.
Daniel Carter.
Not my best friend.
Not a desperate pawn.
He had been a member of the organization for years.
He hadn't betrayed me for money.
He had befriended me from the beginning.
His entire friendship...
Had been an assignment.
Clara covered her mouth.
Marcus quietly loaded his pistol.
My father closed his eyes.
"I trusted him like a son."
Before anyone could speak...
The vault alarm screamed.
Marcus looked at the security monitor.
"They found us."
Black SUVs surrounded the bank.
More than fifty armed men stepped out.
Their leader removed his sunglasses.
Daniel.
He smiled into the security camera.
Then he spoke directly toward it.
"Alex."
May you like
"You've won enough games."
"Now give me the evidence."
