CHAPTER 8 — The Lie That Lasted Thirty Years

"No..."
The lawyer dropped to one knee.
"This isn't real."
"It can't be."
The elderly man slowly removed his gloves.
"I never abandoned you."
"I disappeared to protect you."
Nobody understood.
Not me.
Not Marcus.
Not even my father.
The old man looked directly at the lawyer.
"Your mother believed I died."
"So did you."
"I made sure of it."
"Why?" the lawyer shouted.
"Because your grandfather found out."
"He ordered my execution after I refused to surrender the partnership documents."
"I escaped."
"But everyone who helped me..."
"...was murdered."
The cellar fell silent.
"I realized that if anyone knew I was alive..."
"...they would kill my wife."
"...and my little boy."
"So I vanished."
The lawyer's hands trembled violently.
"I spent my entire life hating the wrong family."
The old man nodded sadly.
"Yes."
"It wasn't Richard's father."
"It wasn't Richard."
"It wasn't Alexander."
"It was someone else."
Marcus frowned.
"Then who orchestrated everything?"
The old man slowly pointed toward the ceiling.
"Not someone."
"Someones."
"What do you mean?"
"There isn't one mastermind."
"There are four."
He looked directly at me.
"They've been controlling politicians..."
"Judges..."
"Banks..."
"And corporations for decades."
"The Hayes family was only one of many targets."
He reached into his coat pocket and handed me a small brass key.
"This opens Safety Deposit Box 717."
"Inside is every name."
Every payment.
Every murder.
Every company they destroyed.
Before anyone could ask another question...
A loud explosion shook the tunnel.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Marcus shouted,
"Everyone down!"
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the cellar.
Automatic gunfire erupted from both entrances.
Bullets slammed into stone walls.
Someone screamed.
Someone fell.
I grabbed Clara's hand as Marcus returned fire.
The old man shoved the lawyer behind a wine barrel.
"They've found us!" he yelled.
"They know the list still exists!"
A masked gunman appeared through the smoke.
Then another.
Then another.
At least twenty heavily armed mercenaries flooded into the cellar.
One of them shouted through a radio:
"Forget Hayes!"
"Secure the key!"
The brass key in my hand suddenly felt heavier than gold.
It wasn't just a key.
It was evidence powerful enough to destroy an empire.
Marcus fired again.
"Alex!"
"Run!"
I grabbed Clara's hand.
My father struggled to his feet.
The old man covered us with a shotgun he had pulled from beneath an ancient wine rack.
As we disappeared into the collapsing tunnel...
I heard him shout one final sentence.
"Don't let them open Box 717..."
A deafening explosion cut him off.
The tunnel collapsed behind us.
The blast threw us to the ground.
When the dust finally settled...
The old man...
The lawyer...
And every mercenary behind the collapsed tunnel...
Had disappeared beneath thousands of tons of stone.
The only thing left in my hand...
Was the brass key.
May you like
And the terrifying realization that an invisible organization powerful enough to fake deaths, manipulate governments, and erase entire families...
Was now hunting us next.
