CHAPTER 7 — The Real Mastermind Finally Revealed

The underground wine cellar fell silent.

Only the sound of dripping water echoed through the darkness.

The lawyer smiled as he held the pistol against my father's temple.

"You've spent weeks exposing traitors," he said calmly.

"But you never asked who was directing them."

I stared at him in disbelief.

"You helped me plan the fake paralysis."

He nodded.

"I did."

"You prepared every legal document."

"I did."

"You told me to trust no one."

"I meant every word."

My finger tightened around the pistol Marcus had handed me.

"Then why?"

The lawyer chuckled.

"Because every great illusion needs a convincing magician."

Marcus slowly circled to the right, searching for an opening.

The lawyer noticed immediately.

"One more step," he warned, "and Richard Hayes dies."

Marcus froze.

My father looked exhausted, his face pale from weeks of poisoning.

"Alex..." he whispered.

"Don't negotiate with him."

The lawyer laughed.

"Still stubborn."

He reached into the envelope labeled THE REAL WILL and removed several yellowed documents.

"You think Hayes Corporation belongs to your family."

"It never did."

He threw the first page onto the floor.

I picked it up.

The signatures were authentic.

The date...

Thirty years earlier.

The document revealed that my grandfather had secretly borrowed nearly every asset of the company from a silent financial partner during a catastrophic market collapse.

Without that investor...

The Hayes empire would have disappeared decades ago.

"But he never repaid the debt," the lawyer said.

"Instead, he erased every record."

I looked up.

"Who was the investor?"

The lawyer smiled.

"My father."

The room froze.

"My family built your family's fortune."

"When your grandfather stole everything..."

"He also destroyed my father."

"He died bankrupt."

"My mother died believing justice would never come."

The lawyer's calm voice hardened.

"So I became a lawyer."

"I waited."

"I earned your father's trust."

"I watched your family from the inside."

"For twenty-seven years."

Marcus whispered, "This has been revenge."

"No," the lawyer replied.

"This has been patience."

He looked directly at me.

"Vanessa?"

"A pawn."

"Martin?"

"Greed made him useful."

"Daniel?"

"A desperate gambler drowning in debt."

"They all believed they were manipulating each other."

"They never realized they were following my script."

Clara suddenly stepped forward.

"What about the poison?"

The lawyer smiled again.

"I never intended to kill Richard."

Everyone stared at him.

"I wanted him alive."

"So he could watch everything he loved collapse."

My father shook his head.

"You've become worse than the man you hated."

For the first time...

The lawyer's smile faded.

Then...

A slow clap echoed from the shadows.

One.

Two.

Three.

We all turned.

A tall elderly man stepped out of the darkness.

Elegant black suit.

Silver hair.

Walking cane.

Sharp blue eyes.

The lawyer's face lost all color.

"No..." he whispered.

"Impossible."

The old man smiled.

"I've been dead for fifteen years."

My father gasped.

"So have I."

The lawyer stumbled backward.

"You..."

"My father?"

The old man nodded.

"Hello, son."

The cellar exploded into confusion.

The lawyer's father...

The man whose death had fueled thirty years of revenge...

May you like

Was standing right in front of him.

Alive.
