CHAPTER 3 — The Man Who Rose From the Wheelchair

No one screamed.

At first.

The ballroom was so silent that the sound of Titan's labored breathing echoed across the marble floor.

Every eye was fixed on me.

Not the poisoned dog.

Not the shattered champagne glass.

Me.

The man everyone believed would never stand again.

I took one slow step.

Then another.

The gray blanket slipped from my legs and fell onto the polished floor.

Vanessa's face turned ghost white.

"You..." she whispered.

"That's impossible."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"Funny," I said calmly. "That's exactly what I wanted everyone to believe."

Panic spread through the room.

Several investors stood up.

Board members exchanged frightened glances.

My uncle Martin stumbled backward, spilling champagne down the front of his expensive suit.

Daniel looked like he'd seen a ghost.

Only Clara smiled.

Not because she was surprised.

Because she had been protecting my secret all along.

Marcus stepped beside me.

His security team quietly locked every ballroom entrance.

Heavy doors slammed shut.

Click.

Click.

Click.

No one was leaving.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I announced, my voice echoing through the hall, "thank you for participating in the most expensive loyalty test in Hayes Corporation's history."

The room exploded with shouting.

"You lied to us!"

"This is outrageous!"

"How dare you!"

I raised one hand.

Silence returned.

"I lied about one thing."

I looked around the room.

"You lied about everything."

Marcus pressed a button on a remote control.

The enormous LED screen behind the orchestra flickered to life.

Video after video began to play.

Vanessa laughing while calling me worthless.

Martin secretly meeting with board members.

Daniel handing confidential company files to someone in a parking garage.

Executives discussing how quickly they could replace me.

Guests mocking my disability after pretending to comfort me.

Every hidden camera.

Every hidden microphone.

Every betrayal.

Nobody could deny it anymore.

Vanessa rushed toward the stage.

"You recorded us without permission!"

I smiled.

"You were inside my family's private residence."

The lawyer standing near the stage stepped forward.

"All recordings were legally authorized."

Vanessa's confidence collapsed.

She turned desperately toward Martin.

He refused to look at her.

She turned toward Daniel.

He quietly stepped away.

She was alone.

For the first time in years...

No one came to save her.

But before security could escort them away...

Clara suddenly cried out.

"Wait!"

Everyone turned.

Her face had gone pale.

She wasn't looking at Vanessa.

She was staring at Martin.

"I know where the second file is."

Martin froze.

"What file?" I asked.

Clara swallowed hard.

"The one they stole after the accident."

Marcus frowned.

"There wasn't supposed to be a second file."

"There is," Clara whispered.

"And if they destroy it..."

"Your father dies."

The room fell silent.

My heart stopped.

"My father?"

Clara nodded, tears filling her eyes.

May you like

"They weren't trying to steal your company."

"They were trying to steal his life."
