Chapter 1 - THE TOUCH THAT BROKE THE CURSE

I stood in the sterile, fluorescent-lit hallway of St. Raphael's Medical Center, my breath catching in my throat. The floor security guard’s words hung in the cold air between us like heavy smoke:

"Mr. Park wants to know why your touch is the first thing he has felt in twelve years."

Dr. Brennan was already signing the emergency surgical authorization forms on his clipboard. "Mara," he whispered urgently, his eyes wide with a mix of disbelief and awe. "I don't know who this Adrian Park is to you, but Park Meridian Capital just wire-transferred five hundred thousand dollars directly to the hospital's priority account. Your grandmother is going into the operating room right now."

My hands shook as I signed the consent form. Tears blurred my vision as I watched the surgical team wheel Grandma Bee down the corridor. Her pale, frail hand slipped out from under the sheet. Before they pulled her through the double doors, I leaned down and whispered into her ear, "I've got you, Grandma. You're going to make it."

As the doors swung shut, the tall security guard stepped forward. His posture was rigid, military-grade. "Miss Mara Vance. Mr. Park’s private vehicle is waiting downstairs. You are coming with me."

"I can't leave her," I pleaded, my heart hammering against my ribs. "She’s all I have!"

"If you don't step into that elevator in five seconds," the guard replied in a low, chillingly precise voice, "the wire transfer will be reversed. And Dr. Brennan will be ordered to step away from the operating table."

A cold shudder ran down my spine. Adrian Park wasn't just a billionaire; he was a master puppeteer pulling every string in my life.

Twenty minutes later, a tinted Maybach pulled up to the subterranean entrance of the ultra-exclusive Obsidian Manor, a fortress-like estate hidden in the hills outskirts of Chicago. The massive iron gates closed behind us with a heavy, ominous clang.

I was escorted up a winding grand staircase into a dimly lit library. High ceilings, mahogany paneling, and an overwhelming scent of old leather and expensive scotch filled the air.

Standing by a roaring fireplace was Adrian Park.

He had removed his suit jacket. His pristine white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the sharp, lethal line of his jaw. But what terrified me was his hands.

He was staring at his right wrist—the exact spot where my bare skin had made contact with his just an hour ago in his office.

"Close the door, Marcus," Adrian commanded softly without turning around.

The massive oak door slammed shut behind me. I was left completely alone with the most dangerous man in the city.

"What do you mean..." I began, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to appear strong, "...that my touch was the first thing you felt in twelve years?"

Adrian slowly turned to face me. His dark eyes were black pools of absolute isolation.

"Twelve years ago, an 'accident' occurred," Adrian said, his tone devoid of human emotion. "A nerve toxin, crafted specifically for me, entered my bloodstream. Every doctor, every neurologist in the world told me the same thing: my sensory nervous system was permanently deadened. For twelve years, I have felt no pain, no warmth, no cold, no touch. To me, human flesh is nothing more than cold stone."

He stepped closer to me. The sheer presence of the man forced me back until my shoulders hit the edge of his desk.

"Until tonight," he whispered, stopping just inches from my face. "When your hand grabbed my wrist, my nerves burned like liquid fire. My heart rate spiked to 140 beats per minute. For three seconds... I felt alive."

"I... I don't understand," I stammered. "I'm just a cleaner. It was a mistake!"

"There are no mistakes in my world, Mara," Adrian growled, extending his hand toward me. "And now, we test the hypothesis."

Slowly, deliberately, he pulled off his left black leather glove. He reached out his bare fingers and pressed them gently against my cheek.

The moment his skin touched mine, a violent shockwave tore through both of us.

Adrian let out a choked, ragged gasp. His eyes widened in absolute shock as he staggered backward, grabbing his chest. His lungs seized up, and his face drained of all color.

"Adrian!" I screamed.

He collapsed to his knees right in front of me, clutching his throat, completely unable to breathe.
