Chapter 6 - UNMASKED

The flashbulbs were blinding. The entire ballroom descended into total chaos.

"Who is she?!" a reporter screamed from the front row. "Mr. Park! Is your engagement to Victoria Sterling off?!" "Is that your new mistress?!"

Marcus and four heavily armed security guards swarmed the stage, creating a human shield around us. "Clear the room! Event is over! Move!" Marcus shouted, drawing his weapon discreetly to push back the surging press crowd.

Adrian didn't break eye contact with me for a single second. His hand remained tightly wrapped around my waist, his fingers digging into the fabric of my emerald dress, drawing life from my skin.

"Adrian! What are you doing?!" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking with pure humiliation. "Look at what you've done! You've ruined the announcement! You've ruined everything!"

Julian Sterling stepped up to the stage, his face red with fury. "Park! What is the meaning of this insult to my daughter and my company?!"

Adrian slowly turned his head toward Julian. His breathing had stabilized, but the cold, deadly focus in his eyes had returned tenfold.

"The merger," Adrian said, his voice ringing out clearly over the chaotic noise, "is suspended."

"You can't do this!" Julian roared. "We have a contract!"

"I just did," Adrian cold-headedly replied.

Without another word, Adrian grabbed my hand—keeping our bare fingers locked together—and pulled me off the stage. Escorted by his security team, we rushed down a private service corridor and out into the rain-slicked alley behind the hotel, where the armored Maybach was waiting with its doors open.

He shoved me inside and slid in right beside me. The doors slammed shut, cutting off the chaotic screams of the media outside.

The car accelerated into the dark Chicago night.

Inside the Maybach, the tension was suffocating. I tried to pull my hand away from his, but Adrian’s grip tightened.

"Don't," he commanded quietly.

"Adrian, your hand is bare!" I yelled, my emotions finally overflowing. "The reporters saw everything! Victoria's father is going to destroy you! Why did you tell them the merger was suspended?!"

"Because Julian Sterling poisoned my father twelve years ago," Adrian said softly.

The air in the car turned to ice.

I froze, staring at him in shock. "What...?"

"You heard me," Adrian said, turning to look out the window at the rain streaks on the glass. "Twelve years ago, my father discovered that Julian Sterling was embezzling hundreds of millions through illegal offshore accounts. Before my father could go to the federal prosecutors, our car was tampered with. A neurotoxin was introduced through the air filtration system. My parents died instantly. I survived... but the toxin destroyed my nervous system."

Tears sprang to my eyes as I listened to the raw pain beneath his cold facade. "Adrian... I'm so sorry..."

"I spent twelve years building an empire large enough to crush Sterling Global," Adrian continued, his voice trembling slightly. "I pretended to agree to the marriage with Victoria just to get access to Sterling’s private financial servers. But tonight... when I was standing on that stage, suffocating in the dark... I realized something."

He turned his head to look at me. In the passing streetlights, his dark eyes were completely unguarded.

"What did you realize?" I whispered.

"That revenge means nothing if I am dead inside," Adrian said softly. He reached out with his bare hand and gently cupped my cheek.

No pain. No suffocating panic. Just a deep, radiating heat that washed over both of us.

"You aren't just a cure, Mara," Adrian breathed, his thumb gently tracing my cheekbone. "You are the only real thing I have felt in twelve years."

My heart pounded violently against my chest. For a second, I forgot about the billionaire, the money, the danger, and the contracts. I only saw a broken man reaching out from the dark.

I leaned into his touch.

Suddenly, a loud, deafening BANG echoed through the street!

The Maybach violently swerved! The sound of tearing metal and shattering glass filled the cabin as a massive black SUV T-boned our car at full speed!
