Chapter 3 - THE SNAKE IN THE SILK DRESS

By 8:00 AM the following morning, my entire life had been completely upended.

I was moved into a luxurious, sprawling suite on the top floor of Obsidian Manor, adjacent to Adrian’s private quarters. Designer clothes filled the walk-in closet, and a team of stylists had transformed me from a tired, overworked cleaner into someone who looked like she belonged in the upper echelons of High Society.

But it was all a gilded cage.

A soft knock sounded at my door. When I opened it, I wasn't greeted by Adrian, but by a striking woman in her late twenties. She wore a tailored white suit, carried an Hermes Birkin bag, and possessed a gaze that could cut through diamonds.

"So," the woman sneered, stepping into my room uninvited and evaluating me from head to toe with utter disgust. "You're the little cleaning girl Adrian suddenly promoted to his 'personal assistant'."

"Who are you?" I demanded, crossing my arms defensively.

"Victoria Sterling," she replied smoothly, pouring herself a cup of tea from my breakfast tray. "Fiancée to Adrian Park. Or rather... the woman who will be his wife in three months to merge Park Meridian Capital with Sterling Global."

My heart took a strange, unexpected dip. Fiancée? He never mentioned he was engaged.

"He didn't mention me, did he?" Victoria laughed mockingly, taking a slow sip of tea. "Of course he didn't. Adrian doesn't share personal details with the staff. Listen to me very carefully, cleaner. I don't know what kind of cheap game you're playing to get close to Adrian's wealth, but I have spent five years securing my position at his side. If you try to cross me, I will destroy you and every member of your pathetic family."

"I'm just doing my job," I said coldly, holding her gaze. "If you have a problem with my presence here, take it up with Mr. Park."

Victoria’s eyes flashed with pure malice. She took a step toward me, dropping her voice to a lethal whisper. "Adrian hasn't touched a woman in twelve years. He reviles human contact. Do you really think someone like him could ever look at someone like you with anything other than disgust? You are a tool to him, Mara. And tools get thrown away when they break."

She turned on her high heels and strutted out of the room, leaving me trembling with anger.

An hour later, I was summoned to Adrian’s private study downstairs.

When I entered, Adrian was standing near the window, reviewing financial documents on a tablet. He was wearing his black leather gloves again.

"Victoria visited you," Adrian stated without looking up. It wasn't a question.

"Yes, she did," I said, walking over to his desk. "She informed me that she's your fiancée. You failed to mention that little detail while you were blackmailing me last night."

Adrian locked his tablet and finally looked at me. His gaze lingered on my transformed appearance—the sleek navy dress, my styled hair—for a second longer than necessary before his expression went cold again.

"Victoria is a business transaction," Adrian said coldly. "Our marriage is a corporate merger designed to secure seventy percent of the Midwest financial market. My personal life is none of your concern."

"And what am I?" I shot back bitterly. "Another business transaction?"

"You are my medical treatment," Adrian replied harshly, stepping toward me. "And today, we begin the next stage of therapy."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heart monitor device, strapping it to his wrist. Then, he slowly pulled off his glove once more.

"The doctor who designed my bio-monitoring equipment believes that short, controlled bursts of physical contact will force my nervous system to recalibrate without causing a fatal respiratory shutdown," Adrian explained, his tone completely clinical.

He held out his hand. "Give me your hand, Mara."

I hesitated. The memory of him suffocating on the floor last night was still fresh in my mind. "Adrian, what if it happens again?"

"Then you save me again," he commanded. "Take my hand."

I took a deep breath and reached out. My fingers wrapped around his bare hand.

The shockwave hit us instantly.

A jolt of pure electricity shot up my arm, sending a wave of incredible heat straight to my heart. Adrian groaned, his grip tightening around my fingers like a vise. The heart monitor on his wrist began to beep rapidly—110... 130... 150 BPM!

"Adrian..." I gasped, feeling dizzy as the strange energy pulsed between us.

His eyes burned into mine with an intensity that made my blood run hot. He pulled me closer, reducing the space between us to nothing. I could feel the ragged heat of his breath on my lips.

"Keep holding on," Adrian strained, his voice dark and breathless, fight-or-flight kicking in as his lungs began to spasm. "Don't... let... go..."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study swung open!

"Adrian, darling, I forgot my—" Victoria stopped dead in her tracks at the doorway.

Her eyes widened in horror and fury as she saw her cold, untouchable billionaire fiancé holding my hand tightly, his body shaking with raw, intimate emotion, completely bare-skinned.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Victoria screamed.
