Chapter 5 - THE POISONED CHALICE

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of glittering chandeliers, silk gowns, and tailored tuxedos. Chicago’s ultra-wealthy elite swarmed the floor, drinking champagne that cost more than my monthly rent.

I stood near the edge of the room wearing a floor-length emerald green dress that Adrian’s stylists had chosen for me. I felt like an imposter among these wolves, but every time my anxiety spiked, I looked across the room at Adrian.

He was the absolute center of gravity. Standing in his bespoke black tuxedo, holding court with foreign diplomats and tech CEOs, he looked every bit the ruthless billionaire sovereign. Yet, under his left sleeve, he was wearing a hidden bio-sensor—and under his right glove, his skin was dead to the world.

Suddenly, I felt a heavy presence beside me.

"You look remarkably comfortable for a girl who was scrubbing toilets forty-eight hours ago," a deep, greasy voice said.

I turned to see a middle-aged man with thinning hair, a sharp nose, and cold, predatory eyes. His nametag read: Julian Sterling—CEO of Sterling Global. Victoria’s father.

"Mr. Sterling," I said politely, stepping back. "I am just doing my job."

"Your job?" Julian sneered, taking a sip of his champagne. "Adrian thinks he's clever. He brings a nobody like you into his inner circle, hides you behind non-disclosure agreements. But I know things about Adrian Park that could ruin him, Miss Vance."

My eyes narrowed. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Twelve years ago," Julian whispered, leaning in closer, his voice dropping into a dark, sinister tone. "The car crash that killed Adrian's parents... and left him 'changed'. The world thinks it was an tragic accident. But Adrian knows someone poisoned his father's car with an experimental neurotoxin."

My breath caught in my throat. A neurotoxin? Adrian said his condition was caused by an accident...

"Adrian has spent twelve years hunting for the person who did it," Julian smirked darkly. "He thinks he's getting close. But he's weak, Miss Vance. And if you're standing too close to him when he falls, you'll be destroyed along with him."

Before I could reply, Julian melted away into the crowd.

My mind was spinning. Poisoned? Adrian's family was murdered?

Suddenly, my wrist device vibrated violently—a discreet emergency alert linked to Adrian’s heart monitor!

I panicked and looked across the crowded ballroom.

Adrian was standing near the main stage, surrounded by reporters and photographers flashing bright lights. Beside him stood Victoria, smiling triumphantly for the cameras as she held his arm.

But Adrian wasn't smiling. His face was deadly pale. His breathing was rapid and shallow. His eyes were wide, unfocused, staring blindly into the crowd.

His system is overloading! The stress of the crowds, the flashing lights, and the physical proximity to Victoria without sensory relief was triggering a massive panic attack and neurological shock!

He was going to suffocate right there on national television.

Without thinking, I pushed past wealthy patrons, shoving through the crowd of high-society elites.

"Excuse me! Out of the way!" I gasped.

Adrian’s knees buckled slightly. The reporters gasped as the powerful CEO swayed, clutching his chest. Victoria looked horrified, trying to hold him up while whispering, "Adrian! Stop it! The cameras are watching!"

I reached the stage just as Adrian began to fall forward.

I leapt onto the elevated platform, grabbing Adrian by the lapels of his tuxedo.

"Adrian!" I cried out.

Before the security team could push me away, I ripped off his leather glove with my teeth and slammed my bare palm directly against his bare wrist.

BOOM!

The electrical surge hit us like a lightning bolt.

Adrian gasped loudly, his eyes snapping back into focus as the sensory shock flooded his paralyzed nerves. He grabbed my waist with his free hand, pulling me violently against his chest in front of hundreds of flashing cameras and stunned billionaires.

For three agonizing, breathless seconds, the entire world stopped.

Adrian was breathing deeply, his heart beating wildly against my ribs, his dark eyes locked onto mine with raw, unfiltered desperation.

And right beside us, Victoria Sterling stood in frozen, utter horror as every camera in the room flashed, capturing the terrifying, intimate moment between the untouchable billionaire and his unknown assistant.
