Chapter 2 - THE MONSTER'S CONTRACT

"Help! Someone help him!" I shrieked, dropping to my knees beside him.

Adrian’s skin was burning hot to the touch—a frantic contrast to his usual ice-cold demeanor. His eyes were dilated, bloodshot, locked onto mine in terrifying desperation. He was suffocating, his chest heaving violently, but no air was reaching his lungs.

I didn't think. Instinct took over. I grabbed his face between both of my hands, leaning in close. "Breathe, Adrian! Look at me! Breathe!"

The moment my palms cupped his cheeks, a soft, radiant warmth seemed to surge between us. Adrian gasped loudly, sucking in a deep, agonizing lungful of air as if he had just broken through the surface of deep water.

He fell forward, his heavy forehead coming to rest against my collarbone. His violent tremors slowly subsided as his ragged breathing stabilized.

"You..." he rasped against my skin, his breath burning hot against my throat. "You are the key."

Before I could process what was happening, the library doors burst open. Marcus and three armed guards rushed into the room with weapons drawn.

"Get away from him!" Marcus yelled, pointing a weapon directly at my head.

"Stand down!" Adrian roared, his voice trembling with an uncharacteristic, dangerous intensity. He slowly pushed himself up, standing tall once more, though his breathing was still heavy. He pulled his leather glove back over his left hand, concealing his skin once again.

He looked down at me, his eyes sharp, calculating, and predatory.

"Leave us," Adrian commanded the guards. Marcus hesitated, glaring at me with deep suspicion, but ultimately obeyed, locking the doors behind them.

Adrian walked over to his massive mahogany desk, picked up a pen, and opened a black leather folder containing a thick document.

"Your grandmother's surgery is currently underway," Adrian said, his voice instantly reverting to its cold, corporate demeanor. "The initial operation costs half a million dollars. Her post-operative care, rehabilitation, and long-term medication will cost another two million."

"I don't have that kind of money," I said, wiping a tear from my eye. "You know I don't."

"I am aware," Adrian replied coolly. "Which is why I am giving you a choice."

He slid the document across the table to me.

"What is this?"

"A non-negotiable personal service contract," Adrian stated. "You will resign from your cleaning job. You will move into Obsidian Manor immediately. You will be my personal, exclusive assistant. Your primary duty will be physical proximity."

My heart dropped into my stomach. "Physical proximity? What are you saying?"

"My condition—whatever it is—responds exclusively to your cellular bio-frequency," Adrian explained coldly. "Your touch restores my nerve function. But as you just witnessed, uncontrolled contact causes a massive neurological overload that shuts down my diaphragm. We need to stabilize it. I need you to cure me."

"And if I refuse?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Adrian leaned in, his dark eyes narrowing. "If you walk out that door, the funding for St. Raphael's Medical Center ceases immediately. Your grandmother will be wheeled out of the ICU and placed on the street. She will die within forty-eight hours."

"You monster!" I screamed, grabbing the glass of water on his desk and slamming it onto the floor. "She's an old woman! How can you be so ruthless?!"

Adrian didn't even blink as the glass shattered at his feet.

"I am not a good man, Mara Vance," he said quietly. "I am a billionaire whose entire empire depends on me appearing invincible. If my board of directors finds out I am physically compromised, I lose everything. Sign the contract, save your grandmother, and live in luxury. Refuse, and watch her die."

I looked at the pen in my hand. I thought of Grandma Bee's warm smile, the way she raised me when no one else cared, the sacrifices she made. I had no choice. I never had a choice.

With shaking hands, I pressed the pen to the paper and signed my name on the dotted line.

May you like

Adrian smiled—a chilling, triumphant smirk that sent shivers down my spine.

"Welcome to hell, Miss Vance," he said softly. "Pack your bags. Your life as a free woman ends tonight."
