Chapter 2 - The Scent of Betrayal

Alexander didn’t hesitate. He swung his fist, catching the second man squarely in the jaw. The man stumbled back, but the first man drew a silenced pistol.
"Frank!" Alexander shouted.
Frank, Alexander’s loyal bodyguard and driver, was already moving. He tackled the armed man to the ground, the gun discharging silently into the snow.
"Get them in the car!" Frank yelled, struggling with the mercenary.
Alexander grabbed Clara by the arm. She resisted for a fraction of a second, but when she looked into his desperate eyes, she saw something she hadn't seen in years: absolute, protective love.
"Come with me if you want to live!" Alexander urged, lifting her off her feet as Thomas held the door open.
They scrambled into the back of the armored SUV. Frank managed to break away from the second mercenary, diving into the driver’s seat and slamming the lock button. He hit the gas, the tires smoking as they sped into the chaotic Manhattan traffic.
Behind them, the black sedan immediately gave chase.
Inside the car, the silence was suffocating, broken only by Clara’s heavy, ragged breathing. She curled into the far corner of the leather seat, staring at Alexander and Thomas like they were aliens.
"Are you... are you really my dad?" she whispered, her voice cracking.
Alexander’s eyes welled with tears. He reached out a hand, but stopped, not wanting to frighten her. "I thought you died fourteen years ago. They told me... they told me my wife had a miscarriage, and then she passed away."
"She didn't die in a hospital," Clara said, a tear cutting a clean line through the dirt on her cheek. "She died in a dark room. She hid me. She told me to run when the bad men came. She gave me this ribbon. She said, 'Find your father, Clara. Find Alexander Bennett.'"
Thomas reached out and gently took Clara's dirty hand. "I told you, Dad. I saw her in my dreams. Mom told me she was waiting."

Before Alexander could process the sheer weight of his father's monstrous betrayal, a heavy thud shook the rear of the SUV. The black sedan had rammed them.
"Sir, they're not trying to kidnap her anymore," Frank said, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror. "They're trying to run us off the road!"
