Chapter 6 - The Sealed Room

"You didn't answer my question," Alexander whispered, his eyes burning with a terrifying resolve. "Where is my wife?"

Richard walked over to the bookshelf, pulling a leather-bound volume of Shakespeare. With a heavy click, a section of the wall swung open, revealing a hidden elevator.

"If you want to see her so badly, go find her," Richard said. "But remember, Alexander: once you go down there, there is no coming back to the boardroom."

Alexander looked at Frank, who nodded, holding a secured tactical radio. "I'll watch the old man, sir. Go."

Alexander took Clara, who was now conscious but weak, and Thomas by the hand. They stepped into the elevator. It descended deep beneath the mansion, far past the basement, into a reinforced concrete bunker.

The doors opened to a sterile, white hallway that smelled of bleach and medicine.

At the end of the hall was a single, heavy steel door with a small reinforced glass window.

Alexander ran to the window.

Inside, sitting on a simple white bed, was a woman. Her hair was streaked with gray, and her face was pale, but she was beautiful. She was staring at a small, framed drawing of two children on the wall.

"Catherine..." Alexander choked out.

The woman turned. When she saw Alexander, her eyes went wide. She stood up, her legs shaking, and rushed to the glass.

"Alex?" she cried, her voice muffled by the thick barrier. "Alex, is that you? Is Thomas safe?"

"He's here, Catherine! They're both here!" Alexander yelled, tears streaming down his face.

But as he reached for the keypad to unlock the door, a loud alarm began to blare. The red emergency lights flared, and a mechanized voice echoed through the hallway:

“Containment breach. Self-destruct sequence initiated. T-minus three minutes.”
