Chapter 5 - The Architect of Shadows

With a burst of adrenaline, Alexander grabbed a pen from his pocket and jammed it into the seatbelt release mechanism. It clicked open.

He scrambled over the seats, kicking open the dented rear door. He grabbed Thomas first, setting him safely onto the solid concrete of the bridge. Then he went back for Clara. She was heavy, her wet clothes dragging her down, but he pulled her out just as the first sparks of the thermite charge began to hiss.

"Frank! Wake up!" Alexander screamed, reaching for his driver.

Frank groaned, his eyes fluttering open. He saw the sparks and realized the danger instantly. With Alexander’s help, Frank managed to crawl out of the window just as a blinding white flash erupted from the dashboard.

The heat was intense. The SUV's front end melted like wax, and the weight shift sent the vehicle plunging over the edge, exploding into a fireball as it hit the river below.

The police officers arrived on the scene, guns drawn, but Alexander stood tall, holding his unconscious daughter in his arms, with Thomas clutching his leg.

"I am Alexander Bennett," he announced to the officers, his voice carrying the weight of a man who had just declared war. "Get me a secure transport to the Bennett Estate. Now."

One hour later, the iron gates of the massive Bennett mansion in Westchester opened.

Alexander marched through the front doors, flanked by a dozen heavily armed police officers who had been too intimidated by his corporate power to refuse him.

Sitting in the grand library, sipping a glass of scotch by the fireplace, was Richard Bennett. He looked eighty, but his eyes were as sharp and predatory as a hawk’s.

"Alexander," Richard said smoothly, not even looking up. "You're late for the Hong Kong conference call."

"Where is Catherine?" Alexander demanded, his voice dangerously low.

Richard sighed, setting his glass down. "I told you seven years ago, son. She passed."

"Don't lie to me!" Alexander roared, slamming his hands onto the antique desk. "I found Clara. I know everything. I know you kept her on the streets, hunted like an animal. I know you locked Catherine away!"

Richard slowly stood up, leaning on his cane. A cold, remorseless smile spread across his face. "Do you really think you can destroy me, Alexander? I made you. I made this company. And if I have to destroy you to protect it, I will."
