Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW IN THE BASEMENTThe breathing in the dark was shallow, ragged, and terrified.

I spun around, my military instincts kicking in with cold, razor-sharp precision. The steel door slammed shut behind us, the heavy electronic bolt clicking into place with a definitive thud. My son-in-law stood against the frame, his calm, polished mask completely gone. In its place was a twisted, predatory smile that made my blood run cold.
"You shouldn't have come back, General," he whispered, his voice echoing in the concrete enclosure. "You should have stayed across the ocean, hunting your ghosts. Grace was supposed to be mine."
"Where is she?" I growled, taking a step forward. Every muscle in my body coiled like a spring.
"Look behind the false wall, if you have the stomach for it," he mocked, stepping backward and keying a code into a digital keypad. Before I could lunge, a heavy metal shutter dropped over the exit, plunging the room into pitch blackness, save for the pale glow of a single emergency light.
I didn't hesitate. I dropped to my knees near the wall where Grace's fingernails had carved the message. Pushing against the damp concrete, a hidden latch gave way. A second, smaller chamber opened up, reeking of antiseptic and old iron.
And there, huddled in the corner of a rusted iron cot, was my daughter.

Her once-radiant face was gaunt, bruised, and pale. Her nine-month belly was gone.
"Dad?" she whispered, her voice breaking as tears carved clean paths down her filthy cheeks. "You... you actually came."
