Julian dropped the detonator and lunged for the baby, but I drove my shoulder straight into his chest, sending him flying backward across the concrete floor. He crashed hard into a stack of medical crates, his breath exploding from his lungs in a ragged gasp.

I scooped my crying grandson out of the incubator basket, pressing the tiny, warm bundle gently against my chest. The baby instantly quieted, sensing the familiar rhythm of my heart.

Behind me, Julian groaned, spitting blood as he reached for a dropped pistol.

I didn't turn around. I simply kicked a heavy iron wrench across the floor. It caught him squarely across the temple, knocking him out cold.
