Chapter 10 - DAWN OVER THE ASHESThree days later, the sun rose over the city, washing the rain-slicked streets in a brilliant, golden light.

The sprawling estate on the west side was now surrounded by police cruisers and federal evidence vans. Julian and his entire co-conspirator network were locked away in a maximum-security black-site prison, facing multiple life sentences without parole.
Back inside the main house, the pale-blue nursery had been thoroughly cleaned, restored, and bathed in morning sunlight.
Grace sat propped up in a comfortable armchair, looking healthier and stronger every hour, holding her newborn son—my grandson—wrapped in a soft blue blanket.
I stood by the window, watching the federal agents load the last of Julian's files into a transport truck, when I felt a soft hand touch my arm.
I turned. Grace was smiling, tears glistening in her eyes, though this time they were tears of profound peace.
"What are you going to call him, Dad?" she whispered softly, looking down at the sleeping infant.

I looked at the baby's tiny, perfect fingers, then back out at the horizon where the dark clouds had finally cleared away to reveal a brilliant, unending sky.
"We'll call him Victor," I said, wrapping my arm gently around my daughter and my grandson. "Because the shadows don't get to win today."
