Chapter 1

In the middle of the divorce hearing...
Julián Varela stood up beside Nora Alcázar—the woman he had been having an affair with for the past two years—and smiled as though the judge had already ruled in his favor.
Straightening his silk tie, he declared:
“The company... the house in Las Lomas... the cars...”
“They're all mine.”
“Elisa is walking out of here without a single peso.”
A wave of whispers spread through the Mexico City Family Court courtroom.
Dressed in white, Nora slipped her arm through Julián's and looked at Elisa with a sympathy so fake it was almost insulting.
“She looks exhausted,” Nora whispered.
“Poor thing.”
Elisa Varela remained seated beside her attorney, Marcos Leal.
She wore a simple gray coat.
Her hair was neatly pulled back.
Her hands rested calmly on the table.
She didn't argue.
She didn't cry.
Julián hated that silence.
For ten years, he had done everything he could to break it.
Humiliation.
Threats.
Endless stretches of emotional coldness.
Then apologies wrapped in expensive jewelry she had never asked for.
He leaned closer.
Lowering his voice, he smirked.
“Come on, Elisa.”
“Say something.”
“Beg me.”
On paper...
Everything seemed to support him.
Varela Medical Technologies was registered solely under Julián's name.
Their mansion in Las Lomas was listed as his exclusive property.
The bank accounts had been emptied...
Just three days before Elisa filed for divorce.
Legally...
She appeared to own nothing.
Judge Adriana Robles frowned as she reviewed the case file.
Julián's attorney wore the satisfied grin of a man already planning his victory dinner.
Marcos leaned toward Elisa.
“Are you ready?”
She looked first at the judge...
Then at Julián.
“Yes.”
Slowly...
She stood.
Three court reporters immediately turned their cameras toward her.
The atmosphere shifted.
Even Nora stopped smiling.
Then...
Elisa removed her coat.
Silence filled the courtroom.
Long...
Pale...
Terrible scars covered her shoulders...
Her arms...
And stretched across part of her ribs.
Some looked like old knife wounds.
Others were unmistakable burn scars.
They weren't small marks.
They weren't injuries anyone could easily explain away.
The color drained from Julián's face.
“Elisa...”
“Don't do this.”
Judge Robles leaned forward.
“Mrs. Varela...”
“What do these injuries represent?”
Elisa placed both hands on the table.
Her voice never shook.
“They mean this hearing stopped being just a divorce...”
“The moment I walked into this courtroom.”
Marcos placed a thick evidence binder before the judge.
“Your Honor, we request permission to introduce evidence of coercion, financial fraud, intimidation, and repeated physical abuse.”
Julián's attorney jumped to his feet.
“Objection!”
“This has nothing to do with dividing marital property.”
Marcos met his gaze.
“It has everything to do with it.”
“The assets were concealed through threats and abuse.”
A photograph appeared on the courtroom monitor.
It showed a vacation home in Valle de Bravo.
A broken chair.
Bloodstains on the floor.
A wall calendar dated nine years earlier.
Then came medical records.
Three fractured ribs.
A punctured lung.
Second-degree burns.
One sentence from the hospital report had been highlighted:
“The patient refuses to identify her attacker.”
Julián forced out a nervous laugh.
“That doesn't prove anything.”
Marcos quietly closed the binder.
“The surgeon who treated her...”
“Is waiting outside this courtroom.”
Slowly...
Nora pulled her hand away from Julián's arm.
He grabbed her wrist.
Tightly.
“I can explain.”
For the first time that day...
Elisa looked directly at him.
A calm, peaceful smile crossed her face.
“Oh, I know you can.”
“And today...”
“You're going to explain everything.”
At that very moment...
The courtroom doors swung open.
May you like
The man who walked inside...
Made Julián stop breathing.
