Chapter 3 - The Patent HolderThe lead federal auditor, a formidable woman named Inspector Beatriz Garza, didn't waste a single second. She bypassed the witness stand entirely and walked straight up to Judge Robles' bench, placing a massive stack of federal documents before her.

"Your Honor, good morning," Inspector Garza announced, her voice echoing clearly through the courtroom. "We are executing an emergency federal asset freeze and corporate audit on Varela Medical Technologies, along with all associated shell companies registered in Delaware, Panama, and the Cayman Islands."
Julián’s attorney lunged forward, his face pale with horror. "On what grounds?! This is a private civil family court proceeding! The Treasury Department has no jurisdiction here unless—"
"Unless," Inspector Garza interrupted coldly, turning to face the defense team, "there is concrete, verified evidence of corporate tax evasion, systemic fraud, identity theft, and the unlawful appropriation of federal medical research grants."
She turned around and pointed directly at Elisa.
"Furthermore, the primary intellectual property underlying ninety-four percent of Varela Medical Technologies' valuation—including the groundbreaking surgical laser technology that generated fifty million dollars in revenue last year—is not registered under Julián Varela’s name."
The entire courtroom erupted into a chaotic chorus of gasps and murmurs.
Julián shot up from his chair, his eyes bulging as he stared at the federal inspector. "That's impossible! Every patent belongs to me! I am the founder! I am the public face of the company! Her name isn't on a single corporate filing!"
Inspector Garza raised an eyebrow, pulling a single certified document from the top of the stack and holding it up for the judge to see.
"Mr. Varela, you are correct that Elisa Varela’s name does not appear on the modern corporate registry," Inspector Garza said. "Because ten years ago, right after you forced her into a corner following her hospital discharge, you had her sign a document under the threat of destroying her brother's career."
Inspector Garza slid the paper across the judicial bench.
"You had her sign away her rights as the public founder. But you forgot one crucial detail of international patent law: Prior Art and Original Author Certification."
Inspector Garza turned to face the gallery, her voice ringing out with absolute authority.
"Elisa Alcázar—now Elisa Varela—graduated top of her class from the National Polytechnic Institute with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering at age twenty-one. She designed the prototype for the Varela Surgical Laser when she was twenty-three. Julián Varela was nothing more than a smooth-talking marketing student who stole her designs, married her to lock down her intellectual property, and spent the next decade convincing her she was worthless."
Silence descended upon the courtroom. It was a heavy, suffocating silence.
Elisa sat back down at the defense table, her posture straight, her hands folded calmly in her lap. She didn't look angry. She looked like a chess grandmaster who had just watched her opponent walk right into a checkmate she had set up three years ago.
Julián’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the defense table to keep from collapsing, his chest heaving as reality finally crashed down upon him.
"No..." Julián whispered, shaking his head frantically. "No, no, no. That's... you can't prove that. The patents are mine! I signed the contracts!"
"You signed fraudulent assignment contracts backed by domestic abuse and extortion," Marcos Leal stated smoothly, standing up and sliding a secondary folder across the table. "Under Mexican federal law, and international maritime and corporate statutes, any contract signed under the threat of physical violence or extortion is null and void ab initio—legally dead from the moment of its creation."
Marcos turned to face Judge Robles.
"Your Honor, we have submitted certified digital forensics, original handwritten lab notebooks dating back twelve years, and sworn depositions from the original venture capitalists who funded Elisa’s prototype before Julián systematically isolated her from the scientific community."
Judge Robles flipped through the federal treasury audit report. Her eyes scanned the glowing figures, the corporate asset valuations, and the freeze orders.
Slowly, the judge looked up from the documents. She looked past the panicked defense lawyers, past the weeping mistress, and settled her gaze squarely on Julián Varela.
"Mr. Varela," Judge Robles said, her voice dripping with absolute contempt. "It appears you built an empire on stolen sand, cemented together with physical abuse and corporate fraud."

The judge struck her gavel down with a sharp, definitive crack that made everyone in the room flinch.
"The court hereby grants the petition for divorce on the grounds of severe physical abuse, coercion, and financial fraud. Furthermore, this court upholds the federal asset freeze requested by the Treasury Department. Varela Medical Technologies, along with all subsidiary accounts, real estate holdings, and international assets, are hereby placed under emergency receivership—transferred entirely into the sole custody and legal ownership of Elisa Varela."
