Chapter 3 - The Secret That Refused to DieDean stared at the sudden influx of armed men, his smug expression flickering into genuine shock. He slowly let his hand drop away from his waistband, but a cruel, mocking smile remained on his lips.

"You think you've won, Massimo?" Dean sneered, raising his hands slowly. "You might have caught onto the poisoning, but look around. Who do you think controls the port authority right now? Who holds the loyalty of the capos in Brooklyn and Queens? You're sitting in a wheelchair in the middle of a fortress surrounded by my men. Rocco might be loyal to you, but half your council is already on my payroll."
"Is that so?" Massimo slowly pushed himself up from the armrests of his wheelchair.
The entire room froze.
Camille let out a piercing shriek. Dean’s jaw dropped so fast it practically hit the marble floor. Even Rocco blinked in astonishment, though a proud grin spread across his rugged face.
Six months of agonizing therapy, secret acupuncture, and sheer, unbreakable willpower had rebuilt the shattered nerve pathways. Massimo had been walking in the privacy of his private quarters for weeks, waiting for the exact moment the traitors would expose themselves completely.
Massimo stood at his full height of six-foot-two, towering over Dean. The cold, lifeless look in his gray eyes had been replaced by the terrifying aura of a apex predator reclaiming his throne.
"You thought the poison was working, Dean?" Massimo’s voice echoed like thunder in the vaulted library. "Dr. Hale was a greedy fool. The moment I noticed my strength fading differently than a normal spinal injury, I had my veterinary toxicologist analyze his samples. We switched your 'neurotoxin' with saline weeks ago. Every injection Hale gave me was harmless water."
Dean stepped back in horror, his face draining of all color. "No... that's impossible. Hale confirmed—"
"Hale is already in custody," Rocco interrupted sharply, stepping forward and tossing a heavy leather briefcase onto the mahogany desk. "We picked him up trying to board a private flight to Zurich ten minutes ago. He spilled everything. Every bank account, every offshore transfer you promised him, Dean."
Dean lunged forward in a desperate, suicidal attempt to reach the heavy bronze statue on the desk to use as a weapon. But Rocco was faster. With a brutal sweep of his boot, Rocco kicked Dean’s legs out from under him, sending him crashing hard onto the marble floor. Rocco slammed his heavy boot onto the back of Dean's neck, pinning him face-down.
"Get your hands off me!" Dean screamed, his voice muffled by the carpet. "Massimo, you can't do this! Without me, the Rinaldi syndicate will tear itself apart! The families will eat you alive!"
Massimo walked slowly toward him, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. He stopped right beside Dean’s head and slowly crouched down, looking him dead in the eye.
"The Rinaldi family was built on blood, loyalty, and iron discipline," Massimo said softly, his voice deadpan. "Not betrayal by a snake in a tailored suit. You took two bullets for me? That was your biggest mistake, Dean. You should have aimed for the head."
Massimo stood up and looked at Rocco. "Lock Dean in the basement vault. Make sure Hale joins him. As for Camille..." Massimo turned his cold gaze toward his former fiancée, who was shaking uncontrollably in the corner. "Pack your bags. You have ten minutes to vanish from Long Island before I decide you're worth the trouble of hunting down."
Camille didn't hesitate. She turned and sprinted out of the library, her high heels clicking frantically down the hallway.

The library fell quiet once more, save for the heavy breathing of the captive traitor. Massimo turned his head and noticed Carla and little Nina standing near the doorway. Carla looked terrified, her hands trembling as she shielded her daughter.
Massimo’s expression softened instantly. He walked over to the little girl, knelt down on one knee, and looked at the child who had unwittingly saved his life with a single, innocent toy-like pill.
