Chapter 7 - The Banquet of the DamnedThe grand ballroom of the Rinaldi estate in Brooklyn blazed with the light of a thousand crystal chandeliers. Polished marble floors reflected the glittering lights, and the heavy scent of imported roses filled the air. String quartet music drifted softly from the balcony, creating an atmosphere of opulent celebration.

Yet, beneath the glittering surface, the air was thick with palpable tension.
Syndicate bosses, capos, and underbosses from across the East Coast mingled in tight circles, holding crystal glasses of champagne. Whispers filled the corners of the room.
"I heard Massimo was still paralyzed," whispered Victor Vance, the ruthless leader of the Chicago syndicate, adjusting his white silk tie. "Word is he's just a figurehead now, and the family is tearing itself apart."
"If he shows up tonight and looks weak, we make our move before midnight," murmured Nikolai Petrov, the terrifying patriarch of the Russian Bratva in Queens. "We divide the port authority routes between us."
Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors at the end of the ballroom swung open with a resounding bang. The string quartet cut off mid-note. Absolute silence fell over the room of two hundred dangerous men.
Massimo Rinaldi walked through the doors.
He wasn't in a wheelchair. He walked with a slow, powerful, measured stride, wearing a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his broad shoulders squared, his cold gray eyes sweeping across the terrified assembly. Behind him stood Rocco and twenty heavily armed elite enforcers, their assault rifles held casually but readied for immediate action.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Victor Vance dropped his champagne glass, the crystal shattering loudly on the marble floor. Nikolai Petrov went completely rigid, his hand hovering instinctively near the concealed holster beneath his jacket.
Massimo walked up the small set of velvet-carpeted steps to the elevated dais at the head of the room, turning to face his guests.
"Welcome, gentlemen," Massimo’s deep, resonant voice carried effortlessly across the vast hall. "I am deeply touched that so many of you traveled from across the country to celebrate my... recovery."
Victor Vance forced a tight, nervous smile, stepping forward. "Massimo, my friend! We were devastated to hear about your accident on Brooklyn Avenue. To see you standing here... it's a miracle. Truly a miracle."
"A miracle indeed, Victor," Massimo replied, his gray eyes narrowing into razor-sharp slits. "Though some people in my inner circle believed my paralysis was permanent. They even planned a lovely little funeral for me. Isn't that right, gentlemen?"
Massimo raised his right hand and snapped his fingers.
The side doors burst open, and two guards dragged two bruised, battered figures into the center of the ballroom, shoving them roughly onto the polished floor.

Dean Foster and Dr. Julian Hale blinked blindingly against the harsh chandelier light, trembling in absolute terror.
Victor Vance and Nikolai Petrov exchanged a brief, horrified glance. The trap had sprung, and they had walked right into the jaws of the beast.
