Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper's PastMassimo knelt on the polished marble floor, coming eye-to-eye with three-year-old Nina. The harsh, terrifying aura of the mafia don melted away, replaced by a profound, haunting gentleness.

"You saved my life, little one," Massimo said softly, his hand reaching out to gently touch a curl of her brown hair.
Nina giggled, holding up her small plastic basin of water. "I told you, uncle! Your feet are awake now. You don't need the rolling chair anymore."
Carla rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside her daughter, her voice shaking with panic. "Mr. Rinaldi, please—I swear I had no idea about any of this! I'm just a housekeeper, I didn't know what Dean and Dr. Hale were planning! Please don't hurt us, please..."
Massimo gently placed a hand on Carla’s trembling shoulder, stopping her frantic apologies. "Look at me, Carla," he said firmly.
She looked up, tears pooling in her brown eyes.
"You and Nina are the only reasons I am standing here breathing right now," Massimo said, his voice rich with absolute sincerity. "You never bowed to Dean's intimidation, and your daughter had the courage to pick up what others ignored. You are safe here. As long as I draw breath, no one will ever harm a hair on your heads."
Carla let out a ragged sob of relief, burying her face in her hands as the immense weight of the past hour crashed down on her.
Rocco stepped into the doorway, clearing his throat respectfully. "Boss, Dean is secured in the lower vault. But we have a bigger problem. Word is already spreading through the underworld that Dean tried to overthrow you. The Heads of the Chicago and Miami syndicates are calling. They want to know if the Rinaldi empire is crumbling from within. They smell blood in the water."
Massimo stood up, adjusting his black vest with sharp, precise movements. The softness in his eyes vanished, replaced once again by the cold, calculating steel of a mafia patriarch.
"Let them smell blood," Massimo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous purr. "They think a wounded beast is an easy kill? Tomorrow night, we host a grand dinner at the Brooklyn estate. Invite every Capo, every underboss, and every syndicate leader who thinks they can circle our throne. Let's see who shows up with a knife in their hand."
"Understood, boss," Rocco grinned, a ferocious gleam in his eyes. "I'll send out the summons immediately."
As Rocco turned to leave, Massimo caught sight of a faded tattoo on the inside of Carla's right wrist as she wiped away her tears—a distinct, intricate crest of a rose entwined with a dagger.

Massimo’s eyes narrowed. He had seen that crest before. Fifteen years ago, it belonged to the elite internal security division of the Moretti syndicate—a rival family that had been utterly wiped out in a mysterious massacre in Sicily.
Carla Bennett was not just an ordinary housekeeper whose husband died in a construction accident. Her entire life story was a meticulously crafted lie.
