Chapter 5 - Shadows of SicilyLate that night, the Rinaldi mansion was shrouded in an eerie, unnatural silence. The storm clouds had rolled in from the Atlantic, casting heavy sheets of rain against the tall library windows.

Massimo sat at his mahogany desk, a single desk lamp illuminating the confidential dossier Rocco had just slid across the wood. Inside were deep background checks, old police records from Palermo, and grainy black-and-white photographs from fifteen years ago.
"You were right, boss," Rocco whispered, leaning against the bookshelf. "Carla Bennett isn't her real name. Her birth name is Carla Moretti. She is the surviving daughter of Don Salvatore Moretti."
Massimo stared at the photographs. The young woman in the old Sicilian photo had the exact same sharp brown eyes and quiet demeanor as the housekeeper currently sleeping in the third-floor staff quarters.
"The Moretti family was massacred in a turf war in Palermo," Massimo muttered, tracing the edge of the photo. "My father’s regime took over their territories. Everyone thought the bloodline was entirely eradicated."
"It almost was," Rocco replied. "Her husband wasn't killed in a construction accident in Queens either. That was a cover story engineered by our own former consigliere to hide her identity after she fled to America. She sought refuge in our estate two years ago, applying for a job as a maid under a forged identity."
Massimo leaned back in his leather chair, a complex knot forming in his chest. "She spent two years cleaning our floors, serving our meals, watching us... yet she never tried to poison me. She never leaked our secrets to rival syndicates."
"In fact, boss," Rocco added quietly, "according to our surveillance logs, she intercepted two separate packages sent to Dean by unknown external sources—packages that likely contained surveillance data on your daily movements."
Massimo stood up and walked over to the tall window, watching the rain streak down the glass. The realization hit him with staggering clarity: Carla Moretti had every reason in the world to hate the Rinaldi family. We had destroyed her home, killed her family, and stolen her birthright. Yet, when given the ultimate chance for revenge, she had chosen to protect him through her daughter.
"Where is she now?" Massimo asked.
"Asleep in her quarters with Nina," Rocco answered. "Shall I bring her in for questioning?"
"No," Massimo said firmly. "Leave her be. Let her sleep."
At that exact moment, down in the damp, stone-walled basement vault, Dean Foster sat chained to an iron chair. His face was bruised, and his expensive tailored suit was stained with dirt and blood.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the stone corridor. The iron door creaked open, and a figure stepped into the dim light of the overhead bulb.
Dean looked up, spitting blood onto the stone floor. He expected to see Massimo or Rocco. Instead, standing before him was Dr. Julian Hale, shoved into the cell by two heavily armed guards who promptly locked the door from the outside.
"Julian?" Dean hissed, struggling against his chains. "You idiot! You got caught too?"
Julian Hale was trembling from head to toe, clutching his medical bag like a lifeline. "It's over, Dean! Massimo knows everything! He switched the neurotoxin! We're dead men!"
"Shut up!" Dean snarled, his eyes wild with desperation. "We're not dead yet. I have contingency plans you don't even know about. Listen to me, Julian—tomorrow night, Massimo is hosting a dinner for all the syndicate bosses at the Brooklyn estate. If we can get a message out to the Colombian cartel before then..."

Before Dean could finish his sentence, the heavy steel door creaked open once more.
A tall, imposing figure stepped into the cell. It was Massimo Rinaldi. He wasn't carrying a gun or a weapon. He was wearing a simple black trench coat, his cold gray eyes gleaming in the dim light.
