CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO STOLE A FAMILY

Chaos erupted.
The divorce hearing no longer mattered.
The billion-dollar merger no longer mattered.
Even the company's executives forgot about quarterly profits as armed federal agents stepped into the conference room.
"Victoria Hartwell?"
The lead agent displayed his badge.
"You are under investigation for conspiracy, fraud, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and financial crimes spanning nearly twenty years."
Every executive stood.
Someone whispered,
"My God..."
Victoria remained perfectly still.
"You have no idea who you're dealing with."
The lead agent smiled.
"Oh..."
"We do."
He placed a thick file on the conference table.
Thousands of pages.
Photographs.
Financial records.
Private emails.
Secret offshore accounts.
One photograph immediately caught Ethan's attention.
It showed his late father shaking hands with a man Ethan had never seen before.
Behind the photo...
One sentence was handwritten.
Not your real father.
Ethan frowned.
"What is this?"
The agent looked directly at him.
"Mr. Hartwell..."
"We believe you've been living inside a lie since the day you were born."
The room became silent again.
Victoria suddenly laughed.
Not a nervous laugh.
A victorious one.
"So..."
"You finally figured it out."
She slowly looked toward Ethan.
"I suppose it's time you learned the truth."
Ethan stared at her.
"What truth?"
She smiled.
"The man who raised you..."
"...was never your biological father."
Every person inside the room froze.
Emily instinctively pulled Rose closer.
The agent nodded.
"DNA recovered during another investigation confirmed it last month."
Victoria continued speaking.
"Your father couldn't have children."
"The Hartwell bloodline would have ended."
"So your grandmother made a deal."
"A very expensive deal."
She looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
"You were purchased."
Nobody moved.
Nobody even blinked.
The billionaire who had spent his entire life protecting the Hartwell legacy suddenly discovered...
...he wasn't a Hartwell by blood at all.
Ethan slowly sank back into his chair.
"This..."
He whispered.
"This can't be real."
Victoria reached into her handbag.
"I kept one thing."
She placed an old photograph beside the FBI file.
A young woman holding a newborn baby.
Standing beside her...
A man whose face looked hauntingly familiar.
Emily gasped.
She recognized him instantly.
It was the elderly janitor from Rose's pediatric hospital.
The quiet old man who always smiled at the baby.
The man Ethan had walked past dozens of times without ever noticing.
The agent picked up the photo.
"We've been looking for him for six months."
"Who is he?"
Victoria answered softly.
"Your biological father."
Ethan looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.
Before anyone could ask another question...
Emily noticed something strange.
Rose.
The baby was staring at the photograph.
She reached toward it with both tiny hands...
Then giggled.
On the back of the faded picture...
Hidden beneath decades-old tape...
...was a small brass key.
Attached to it was a handwritten note.
If Ethan ever learns the truth... tell him not to trust the will.
The room fell silent once more.
Because everyone suddenly understood...
