CHAPTER 6 — MY DEAD FATHER WALKED OUT OF THE SHADOWS
Nobody moved.
Not Ethan.
Not Samuel.
Not the armed men.
Only the rain continued falling.
Emily stared at the man stepping out of the limousine.
His hair had turned silver.
His face carried more wrinkles than she remembered.
But his eyes...
They were exactly the same eyes that had read her bedtime stories.
The same hands that had taught her to ride a bicycle.
The same gentle smile.
"Dad..."
She whispered again.
He looked at her with unmistakable affection.
"I've missed you every single day."
Emily's anger exploded.
"You let me believe you were dead!"
"You let me cry over an empty grave!"
"You let your own granddaughter grow up without you!"
For a moment, the old man's eyes filled with regret.
"I know."
"And I'll spend the rest of my life asking for your forgiveness."
Samuel stepped forward.
"Don't believe everything he says."
Emily's father nodded.
"Good advice."
Then he looked at Ethan.
"But this time..."
"...I'm telling the truth."
He slowly raised both hands to show he carried no weapon.
"My real name isn't Daniel Carter."
"It's Alexander Vaughn."
Ethan froze.
"A.V..."
Alexander nodded.
"The initials in the notebook."
"I created Project Phoenix."
The armed guards shifted uneasily.
Even they seemed shocked that he admitted it.
Emily felt sick.
"You... created it?"
"Yes."
"But not for the reason you think."
Alexander reached into his coat and removed a thick folder.
He tossed it toward Ethan.
Inside were classified government documents.
Bank records.
Intelligence reports.
The first page carried a red stamp.

Ethan flipped through them.
His breathing slowed.
"This..."
He whispered.
"...this says Project Phoenix was never a criminal organization."
Alexander nodded.
"It began as a covert operation."
"Designed to expose global money laundering networks."
Samuel frowned.
"So what happened?"
Alexander's face darkened.
"It was stolen."
"By Victoria."
"By corrupt politicians."
"By people who realized they could make billions before anyone noticed."
Emily struggled to process it all.
"So everything..."
"...the fraud..."
"...the murders..."
"...the stolen fortunes..."
Alexander looked directly at her.
"Were committed after I disappeared."
"I spent fifteen years hiding because I was the only witness they couldn't afford to let testify."
Ethan looked up from the files.
"If that's true..."
"...why come back now?"
Alexander smiled sadly.
Then he looked toward little Rose.
"Because she changed everything."
Everyone stared.
Alexander continued.
"The day Rose was born..."
"Victoria ordered someone to eliminate both mother and child."
Emily's blood ran cold.
"What?"
Samuel nodded.
"I stopped them."
Alexander added quietly,
"The nurse who switched your hospital room..."
"The security guard who stayed outside your door..."
"The janitor who always seemed nearby..."
"None of that happened by accident."
Emily slowly turned toward Samuel.
He lowered his eyes.
"I promised your father I'd protect you."
For months...
Samuel had been watching over Emily and Rose without saying a word.
Then Alexander looked toward the armed men surrounding him.
"They don't work for me."
"They're the only people left who refused Victoria's money."
Just then...
One of the guards received a frantic call through his earpiece.
His expression changed instantly.
"Sir..."
Alexander turned.
"What is it?"
"The FBI headquarters..."
"...has been attacked."
Everyone fell silent.
"But that's not the worst part."
The guard swallowed hard.
"Victoria escaped custody."
At that exact moment...
Ethan's phone vibrated.
A video message appeared from an unknown sender.
He pressed play.
Victoria filled the screen.
She smiled calmly.
Then lifted a small pink baby blanket into view.
Rose's favorite blanket.
"If you ever want to see your daughter again..."
"...come alone."
