CHAPTER 7 — THE EMPTY BABY CARRIER

Emily's scream echoed through the abandoned train station.

"ROSE!"

She dropped to her knees, clutching the empty baby blanket still tucked inside the carrier.

"No... no... no..."

Only minutes earlier, Rose had been asleep in her arms.

Now she was gone.

Ethan's heart pounded so hard he could barely think.

He searched every corner of the station.

Behind broken ticket booths.

Inside abandoned waiting rooms.

Nothing.

Samuel Brooks looked toward the shattered windows.

"They used the gunfire as a distraction."

Alexander Vaughn closed his eyes.

"I underestimated Victoria."

Ethan rounded on him.

"You knew she'd come after Rose!"

"I knew she'd come after all of us," Alexander answered. "I just didn't expect her to move this fast."

Emily could barely breathe.

"My baby..."

"Please..."

"She's only eight months old."

Samuel knelt beside her.

"I've known Victoria for over thirty years."

"She'll never hurt Rose."

Emily stared at him.

"How can you possibly know that?"

"Because Rose isn't just Ethan's daughter."

Samuel's expression grew grim.

"She's the legal heir to everything Victoria spent decades trying to control."

Silence fell.

Ethan frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Alexander reached into his coat and removed a folded legal document protected inside a waterproof sleeve.

It bore Eleanor Hartwell's signature.

"The final amendment to your grandmother's will."

Ethan unfolded it with trembling hands.

The first paragraph stole the air from his lungs.

Should Ethan Hartwell have a biological child, all controlling shares of Hartwell Global shall transfer immediately to that child through a protected family trust.

Emily looked up in shock.

"Rose..."

Alexander nodded.

"The moment she was born..."

"...she became the majority owner of Hartwell Global."

Every billionaire on the board.

Every executive.

Every investor.

Every secret deal Victoria had built over twenty years...

could collapse because of one sleeping baby.

Samuel's voice hardened.

"Victoria doesn't need Rose dead."

"She needs Rose alive."

"Long enough to steal what legally belongs to her."

Before anyone could respond, Ethan's phone rang again.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

Victoria's calm voice filled the station.

"You've always been slow, Ethan."

Emily grabbed the phone.

"If you touch my daughter—"

Victoria interrupted.

"Relax."

"She's warm."

"She's fed."

"And unlike you..."

"I actually know how valuable she is."

Emily nearly dropped the phone.

"What do you want?"

"A trade."

"What trade?"

Victoria laughed softly.

"The leather journal."

"The brass key."

"And Alexander Vaughn."

Samuel whispered,

"Don't do it."

Victoria continued,

"Midnight."

"Pier Thirty-Nine."

"Come alone."

"If I see the FBI..."

"...your daughter disappears forever."

The line went dead.

No one spoke.

Finally Ethan looked at Emily.

"I'll go."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"This isn't just your fight anymore."

She wiped away her tears.

"I'm her mother."

"And this time..."

"I'm not letting anyone take my family away again."

Three hours later...

The FBI established a command center inside a nearby warehouse.

Maps covered the walls.

Satellite images.

Shipping records.

Harbor surveillance.

Everything pointed toward one place.

Pier Thirty-Nine.

But something felt wrong.

Samuel stared silently at one old blueprint.

Then his eyes widened.

"Oh no..."

The lead FBI agent hurried over.

"What is it?"

Samuel pointed beneath the pier.

"There's another level."

"Built during World War II."

"Secret tunnels."

Alexander looked at the plans.

"Victoria doesn't want a meeting."

"She wants an execution."

At that exact moment...

One surveillance monitor flickered.

A hidden camera inside the warehouse had activated by itself.

Victoria appeared on the screen.

She smiled directly into the camera.

"I knew you'd find the tunnels."

Everyone froze.

She slowly stepped aside.

Behind her...

Little Rose sat safely inside a white crib, giggling as she played with a stuffed rabbit.

Emily burst into tears.

"Rose..."

Victoria smiled again.

"I'll see you at midnight."

The screen went black.

But no one noticed one small detail.

Behind Victoria...

A shadow moved.

May you like

Someone was secretly standing in the darkness...

watching her.
