CHAPTER 8 — THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED THE QUEEN

Midnight.

Heavy fog rolled across Pier Thirty-Nine.

Cargo containers stretched endlessly into the darkness.

The ocean was almost silent.

Only the distant sound of waves crashing against rusted steel echoed through the harbor.

Ethan walked forward alone.

Exactly as Victoria had demanded.

Hidden hundreds of feet away...

FBI snipers watched through thermal scopes.

Emily refused to stay behind.

Ignoring every order, she secretly followed Ethan through the maze of containers.

"I won't lose my daughter again," she whispered.

At the center of the pier stood Victoria.

Elegant as always.

Rose rested peacefully inside a beautifully decorated crib beside her.

The little girl smiled the moment she saw Ethan.

"Dada..."

It wasn't a clear word.

Just a tiny sound.

But Ethan heard it.

His knees nearly buckled.

Victoria noticed.

"Interesting."

"She already recognizes her father."

Ethan stepped closer.

"I'm here."

"Let her go."

Victoria smiled.

"The journal."

Ethan handed it over.

"The key."

He placed the brass key beside it.

"And Alexander?"

A calm voice answered from behind.

"I'm here."

Everyone turned.

Alexander Vaughn slowly emerged from the fog with his hands raised.

Victoria laughed.

"I knew you'd come."

"You've always cared too much."

Alexander stopped only a few feet away.

"So did Eleanor."

Victoria's smile faded.

"Don't say her name."

Alexander sighed.

"You loved her."

Silence.

For the first time in decades...

Victoria's mask cracked.

"I gave that family everything."

"My youth."

"My loyalty."

"My life."

"And Eleanor left everything..."

"...to a child that wasn't even born."

Her voice shook with rage.

"I deserved that company!"

Alexander looked at her sadly.

"No."

"You deserved love."

"But you chose power."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

Then suddenly...

She pulled a pistol from her coat.

Everyone froze.

"If I can't have Hartwell Global..."

"...no one will."

She pointed the gun toward Rose's crib.

Emily screamed.

"No!"

A gunshot echoed across the harbor.

But it wasn't Victoria's.

Another shot followed immediately.

Victoria's pistol flew from her hand.

She collapsed to one knee, staring in disbelief.

Standing on top of a shipping container...

was a woman in an FBI tactical uniform.

Rifle still smoking.

She lowered her helmet.

Emily gasped.

"I know her..."

Alexander smiled.

"Of course you do."

The woman climbed down calmly.

She walked straight toward Rose.

Picked the baby up gently.

Then turned toward everyone.

"My name..."

She removed her FBI badge.

"...is Eleanor Brooks."

Samuel's eyes instantly filled with tears.

"My daughter..."

Everyone stood frozen.

Alexander nodded quietly.

"The world believed Eleanor Brooks died twenty-five years ago."

Samuel whispered,

"My little girl..."

Eleanor smiled through tears.

"I've been undercover inside Project Phoenix since the beginning."

Victoria stared at her in horror.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

Eleanor looked directly at her.

"You spent twenty-five years hunting ghosts."

"And the ghost was standing beside you the whole time."

FBI agents rushed in from every direction.

Victoria was finally surrounded.

She slowly lifted her hands.

"It's over."

But as the agents moved to arrest her...

She began laughing.

Not hysterically.

Confidently.

"You think I built Project Phoenix?"

She looked at Ethan.

"You still don't understand."

She slowly nodded toward the ocean.

A massive luxury yacht emerged from the fog.

Every light aboard switched on at once.

A single elderly man stepped onto the deck.

Perfectly dressed.

Hands resting on a silver cane.

The moment Alexander saw his face...

all the color drained from his own.

"No..."

He whispered.

"It can't be..."

The old man smiled across the water.

Then tipped his hat toward Ethan.

May you like

"My grandson..."

"It's finally time we met."
