CHAPTER 9 — THE GRANDFATHER WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ALIVE

The harbor fell silent.

Even the crashing waves seemed to fade as the enormous white yacht drifted toward Pier Thirty-Nine.

No one moved.

Dozens of FBI agents instinctively raised their weapons.

The elderly man standing on the deck never flinched.

He leaned lightly on his silver cane, wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal overcoat despite the cold ocean wind.

His calm smile unsettled everyone.

"My grandson..." he repeated.

"It's finally time we met."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"My grandfather died thirty years ago."

The old man chuckled softly.

"So did Emily's father."

"So did Samuel Brooks."

"So did Eleanor Brooks."

He spread his arms.

"You should know by now..."

"...death is a very flexible word."

Victoria, now handcuffed, lowered her head.

For the first time since the nightmare began...

She looked afraid.

Not of the FBI.

Not of prison.

Of him.

The lead FBI agent whispered into his radio.

"Positive identification."

A pause.

Then the reply came.

The agent's face turned pale.

"There is no government record of this man existing after 1992."

Alexander Vaughn closed his eyes.

"I prayed I'd never see him again."

Ethan looked toward him.

"Who is he?"

Alexander answered with visible dread.

"His real name is Charles Whitaker."

The name struck every executive who had followed the investigation.

Whitaker.

The founder whose name stood on the tower where Ethan had built his empire.

The billionaire whose supposed death had become business legend.

"The company..." Ethan whispered.

"...was named after him."

Charles smiled.

"Finally."

"Someone remembers."

He stepped off the yacht without assistance.

Despite appearing nearly eighty years old, every movement was steady.

Measured.

Controlled.

He stopped only a few feet from Ethan.

Then his eyes shifted toward Rose.

The baby reached toward the old man's silver cane and laughed.

Charles' smile softened.

"So this is the little girl who ruined thirty years of planning."

Emily instinctively held Rose closer.

"Stay away from my daughter."

Charles nodded respectfully.

"I have no intention of harming her."

He looked around the pier.

"I've harmed enough families already."

Silence.

Then he did something no one expected.

He removed a thick envelope from inside his coat.

Placed it into Ethan's hands.

"I didn't come here to fight."

"I came to surrender."

Confusion spread through the crowd.

Victoria shouted,

"Don't listen to him!"

"He's lying!"

Charles ignored her.

"You all think Project Phoenix was about greed."

"It wasn't."

"It was about fear."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"Thirty-five years ago I discovered that Hartwell Global had been infiltrated by organized criminals who intended to use the company to launder billions."

"The government refused to act."

"So I disappeared."

"I built Project Phoenix to gather evidence from the inside."

Alexander stepped forward.

"That was the original mission."

Charles nodded.

"But while we were collecting evidence..."

"...Victoria and her allies turned the operation into a criminal empire."

He lowered his head.

"I created the machine."

"They became the monsters."

Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside lay hundreds of handwritten pages.

Bank accounts.

Names.

Secret recordings.

Every crime.

Every payoff.

Every murder order.

Signed.

Dated.

Verified.

Enough evidence to dismantle an empire.

Charles looked at the FBI.

"I'll testify."

"I'll confess."

"I'll spend whatever years I have left in prison."

Then he looked at Rose.

"But that little girl deserves a future free from our sins."

Before anyone could respond—

A single gunshot rang out.

Everyone turned.

Victoria had somehow grabbed a fallen pistol.

She wasn't aiming at Ethan.

She wasn't aiming at Emily.

She was aiming at Charles.

"I gave you my life!" she screamed.

"You promised we'd build it together!"

The bullet struck Charles in the shoulder.

FBI agents tackled Victoria instantly.

As she was dragged away in handcuffs, she laughed and cried at the same time.

"You'll never erase me..."

"I built your empire!"

"No," Charles whispered through the pain.

"You buried it."

As paramedics rushed toward him, he grabbed Ethan's wrist.

"There isn't much time."

May you like

"Read the last page."

Then he lost consciousness.
