CHAPTER 11 — The Choice No Father Should Ever Face

Mercer pressed a button.

Three large screens lit up.

On one screen...

Federal agents were surrounding Mercer-owned offices across Texas.

On another...

News anchors were reporting multiple financial raids.

On the third...

A countdown clock.

Twenty minutes.

"What is that?" Sofia asked.

Mercer remained calm.

"My insurance policy."

"If that timer reaches zero, encrypted files exposing thousands of innocent clients—not criminals, but ordinary families whose financial records were stolen over the years—will be released onto the internet."

Alexander stared at the screen.

"You'd destroy innocent people to save yourself?"

"I'd destroy anything."

Mercer looked directly at Sofia.

"Power has no conscience."

Alexander slowly removed his watch and placed it on the table.

"You want me."

"Let them leave."

Mercer smiled.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Two armed guards stepped forward.

Mercer raised a hand.

"No."

"I gave Alex my word years ago."

He looked toward Elena and Sofia.

"You may leave."

Sofia immediately shook her head.

"No."

"I'm not leaving him."

Alexander's voice softened for the first time.

"You already survived one nightmare."

"You don't need another."

Tears filled Sofia's eyes.

"I spent ten years believing you abandoned me."

"I'm not walking away from you now."

Elena quietly reached for Alexander's hand.

Something she had not done since the divorce.

"We leave together."

Mercer sighed.

"Families."

"So inconvenient."

At that exact moment, every light inside the chamber went dark again.

A deafening alarm filled the vault.

One of Mercer's security monitors flashed red.

"Unauthorized access."

His confident expression disappeared for the first time.

"What?"

A voice crackled through his communications headset.

"Sir... federal tactical teams are inside the building!"

Mercer slowly turned toward Alexander.

"You planned this."

Alexander finally smiled.

"No."

"My daughter did."

Everyone looked at Sofia.

She reached into her wedding bouquet, which had remained beside her since the attack.

Hidden inside the handle was a tiny GPS transmitter and emergency recorder.

"I activated it the night they attacked me," she said.

"I didn't know who would find it."

"But I knew someone eventually would."

Mercer stared at her in disbelief.

May you like

"The frightened bride..."

"...was recording us all along?"
