CHAPTER 14 — Justice Wasn't Finished Yet

The Department of Justice reopened dozens of closed investigations.
Search warrants were issued across three states.
Financial records stretching back thirty years were reexamined.
The evidence hidden inside Sofia's condominium became the key that unraveled an enormous corruption network.
Judge Ellison resigned before he could be arrested.
Two days later, he disappeared.
The media called him America's most wanted fugitive.
Meanwhile, Sofia received hundreds of letters from women she had never met.
Some wrote about abusive marriages.
Others described being pressured into signing away homes, inheritances, or businesses.
One sentence appeared again and again.
"Your story gave me the courage to leave."
Sofia quietly folded every letter into a wooden box she kept beside her desk.
She read each one.
She answered as many as she could.
One afternoon, Elena watched her daughter preparing care packages for women arriving at the foundation's emergency shelter.
"You've changed," Elena said softly.
Sofia smiled.
"I had to."
"If I let that night define me, then Carmen won."
Elena embraced her.
"No."
"You survived."
"That's why you won."
Across town, Alexander received one final phone call from federal agents.
"We found Judge Ellison."
Alexander remained silent.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"He wants to meet only one person."
"Who?"
"You."
The meeting took place inside a high-security federal detention center.
Ellison looked twenty years older.
His expensive suits had been replaced by a plain prison uniform.
"You came," he said.
Alexander remained standing.
"I came for answers."
The judge laughed bitterly.
"You still think Mercer was the villain."
"He was."
"No."
"He was ambitious."
"The real villains were ordinary people who kept looking away."
Alexander frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Ellison leaned forward.
"Carmen didn't begin with violence."
"She began with control."
"Mercer didn't begin with corruption."
"He began with small compromises."
"I didn't begin by breaking the law."
"I began by telling myself one lie..."
Just this once.
The room fell silent.
For the first time since everything had begun, Alexander realized something painful.
Evil rarely arrived all at once.
Sometimes...
May you like
It entered quietly.
One excuse at a time.
