CHAPTER 5 — The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
Late that night, Mateo—the nervous cousin from the wedding—arrived at Elena's apartment.
His face was bruised.
Someone had beaten him.
"They know I talked."
Alexander opened the door wider.
"What do you have?"
Mateo handed over an old voice recorder.
"I found it in the hotel hallway."
"I was too scared to give it to the police."
Alexander pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Carmen's voice.
"If she refuses, hit her again."
Another woman's laughter.
A slap.
Sofia quietly looked away.
Then...
A man's voice entered the recording.
Not Javier.
A deeper voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
"If she signs, we leave."
"If she doesn't..."
A long pause.
"...make sure she never reports anything."
Elena stared at Alexander.
"Do you recognize him?"
Alexander didn't answer immediately.
He replayed the sentence three times.
Then he whispered,
"I've heard that voice before."
He walked toward the bookshelf and opened an old storage box that had not been touched in years.
Inside were files from a corporate fraud investigation he had worked on before his divorce.
He pulled out one photograph.
A boardroom.
Several executives.
One man's face had been circled in red.
Alexander compared the voice recording with the photograph.
His breathing slowed.
"It can't be..."
Elena looked at the picture.
"Who is he?"
Alexander answered quietly.
"The man who tried to destroy my company twelve years ago."
"And I thought he died."
Meanwhile...
Javier sat alone inside a remote cabin hundreds of miles away.
A luxury SUV stopped outside.
A silver-haired man stepped inside without knocking.
"You failed."
Javier swallowed hard.
"I did everything my mother asked."
The older man smiled.
"No."
"You did exactly what I expected."
Javier looked confused.
"What happens now?"
The man placed a passport on the table.
"You disappear."
"And your mother takes the blame."
For the first time, Javier realized something horrifying.
