Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Crown

The final piece of the puzzle fell into place on a crisp October morning, exactly two years and eight months after the shooting that had tried to end my life.

The federal grand jury investigation into Marcone’s syndicate officially closed, with all charges quietly dropped due to "insufficient evidence"—a neat little miracle orchestrated by my legal team and the politicians who owed their seats to my campaign contributions. The underworld was stable, my empire was expanding into legitimate global logistics and real estate development, and the fortress was no longer a tomb.

It was a fortress once more, but this time, it had a heart.

We stood together on the grand marble front steps of the estate—Luke, my security detail, several top executives, and Emma standing right beside my wheelchair. Down the winding driveway, a sleek black Mercedes was idling, waiting to take us into the city for a rare public appearance at a downtown charity gala I was sponsoring.

Emma was wearing an emerald-green silk dress that caught the morning light, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She looked less like an exhausted diner waitress drowning in debt, and more like the queen of the city she had helped me reclaim.

"Are you ready for this?" she asked, leaning down and placing her warm hand over my knuckles resting on the armrest of the titanium chair.

"I've faced snipers, syndicates, and federal prosecutors," I said, looking up into her eyes with a quiet, absolute confidence. "A room full of Chicago socialites is nothing."

Emma laughed, a bright, clear sound that echoed across the manicured lawns.

Luke opened the door of the Mercedes and stepped back, holding out his hand to help Emma into the vehicle. She slid inside comfortably, leaving the door open for a moment as I maneuvered my chair up the custom hydraulic lift built into the side of the van.

Before rolling inside, I paused, turning my head to look back up at the towering stone facade of the estate. The dark, brooding shadows that had haunted my mind for years were gone, burned away by the relentless, fierce light of an unexpected ordinary maid who had walked through my doors and refused to be afraid of a monster.

I rolled into the vehicle, pulled the door shut behind me, and looked at the woman sitting beside me as the car pulled smoothly down the driveway, heading out into the bright, open streets of Chicago.

The empire was mine. And for the first time in my life, I wasn't ruling it alone.
