Chapter 5 - Blood in the Snow

Winter descended on Chicago with a vengeance, burying the city beneath three feet of jagged, frozen snow. The estate became an isolated island, accessible only via plowed private roads lined with armed security checkpoints.

It was during this bitter isolation that the ghosts of my past decided to pay a visit.

It happened on a Friday night at 1:15 AM. Emma was sitting across from me in my study, going over her mother's medical reports, while I reviewed shipping manifests from our European ports. Suddenly, the estate’s master lighting system flickered and died, plunging the sprawling mansion into absolute darkness, save for the emergency red glow of the backup generators.

Before I could reach for the panic console, the heavy oak doors of the study blew inward with a deafening crash. Splintered wood and iron hinges showered across the floor.

"Get down!" I roared, lunging forward in my chair and drawing the suppressed Glock from beneath the desk holster.

Three figures clad in matte-black tactical gear and thermal balaclavas surged into the room, automatic weapons raised. They weren't common street thugs; their movement was disciplined, military, ruthless. The Outfit’s elite cleanup crew. They had bypassed the outer perimeter, neutralized the security detail at the gates, and breached the main house in less than two minutes.

"Danny Vance!" the lead operative barked, his voice distorted by a throat mic. "Hands on the desk where we can see them! The boss sends his regards!"

Emma screamed, scrambling backward until her spine hit the heavy oak bookshelves.

"Keep your eyes on me!" I shouted, raising the Glock and squeezing the trigger twice.

The first mercenary dropped instantly, a 9mm round punching clean through his ceramic body armor plate and dropping him like a stone. The second operative returned fire, shattering the mahogany desktop into a thousand deadly splinters and grazing my left shoulder. Warm blood soaked through my custom silk shirt.

"Danny!" Emma cried, starting to crawl toward me across the open floor.

"Stay back, you idiot!" I yelled, firing again and catching the second attacker in the thigh.

Before I could adjust my aim for the third man, the lead operative lunged forward, kicking the gun out of my hand with a sickening crunch of my knuckles. He grabbed me by the collar of my shirt, hauling me upright in the wheelchair until my face was inches from his tinted visor.

"End of the line, crippled king," the assassin hissed, drawing a combat knife from his chest rig. "Time to bury the empire."
