The rain lashed against the bulletproof windows of the Mercedes as we cut through downtown traffic toward the North Side penthouse. Inside the climate-controlled cabin, the hum of the engine was the only sound for miles.

Emma sat beside me, staring out at the blurred neon lights of Chicago. Her fingers traced the rim of her engagement ring—a simple band of platinum holding a deep green emerald that matched her eyes.

"You're quiet," I noted, keeping my voice low so Luke couldn't hear from the front seat.

"I was just thinking about the diner," Emma said, turning to look at me with a faint, ironic smile. "Thinking about how ironic it is that I used to scrub greasy floors for minimum wage just to afford bus fare, and now I’m riding in a custom armored car with a man who owns half the skyscrapers on this skyline."

"You didn't get here by accident," I replied, resting my hand over hers. "You survived because you have more grit than anyone in the syndicate."

"Survival isn't the same as living, Danny." Her voice dropped an octave, carrying a sudden, piercing gravity. "And neither is haunting a fortress. You haven't left this estate for anything other than syndicate business in over thirty months. When was the last time you felt the sun on your face without a dozen armed guards scanning the rooftops?"

Before I could formulate a sharp retort, the car jerked violently.

The tires shrieked against the wet asphalt as Luke slammed on the brakes. The bulletproof glass on the driver's side starred into a web of white fractures as a deafening CRACK echoed through the street.

"Ambush!" Luke roared, drawing his weapon and ducking his head. "Get down!"
