Chapter 13 - Breaking the Cage

"We can't stay in the car," Luke shouted, scanning the perimeter as bullets began to systematically chew through the Mercedes' reinforced side panels. "They're planting explosives on the doors. We have thirty seconds before this whole cabin becomes a coffin."
I looked at Emma. The fear in her eyes had melted away, replaced by the exact same stubborn, unbreakable resolve she had shown the first night she walked into my estate.
"Emma, listen to me," I said, my voice cutting through the deafening noise of gunfire hitting the chassis. "When Luke opens the side door, you run for the drainage culvert behind the concrete barrier. Do not look back."
"I am not leaving you here to die, Danny," she snapped, grabbing my collar and pulling me toward her so our faces were inches apart. "I didn't crawl out of the slums just to watch you play hero and get yourself executed in a damn alleyway!"
"I'm not playing hero," I growled, a dark, lethal smile spreading across my face. "I'm a king defending his crown. And nobody takes my city twice."
Before she could argue, Luke slammed his shoulder against the driver's side door, kicking it open despite the jammed hinges. He fired three rapid shots into the chest of an advancing mercenary, dropping him into the wet pavement.
"Go!" Luke roared.
Instead of running, Emma reached down, grabbed a secondary tactical submachine gun from the floor pouch where Luke kept backup hardware, and shoved it directly into my lap. Then, she wrapped her arms around my torso, using her own strength to help me haul my dead-weight legs out of the vehicle and into the shelter of the concrete barrier.
Bullets whined over our heads, chipping away concrete and sending sharp grey dust into the air.

"You're insane," I muttered, coughing as I raised my weapon and sighted down the barrel toward the muzzle flashes across the street.
"You taught me how to survive," Emma yelled over the gunfire, dropping beside me with the submachine gun resting expertly against her shoulder. "Now let me cover your six!"
