Chapter 2 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PASTThe ink of Luka Moretti’s signature on the birth certificate hadn't even dried when the nurse stepped forward, her eyes wide with a mix of shock and bureaucratic panic.

“Sir, you… you can't just sign that line,” the nurse stammered, looking back and forth between Luka’s imposing, tattooed frame and my pale, trembling face. “Legally, unless you are the biological parent or have prior court-approved adoption authorization—or if the mother officially designates you—this document becomes a legal entanglement that—"
“It’s handled,” Luka interrupted. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried an absolute, crushing weight that immediately silenced the nurse. He reached into his heavy black leather jacket and slid a thick, government-sealed document onto the nurse’s clipboard.
The nurse glanced down at the paper. Whatever seal or watermark was stamped on that document made her breath hitch. She swallowed hard, blinked rapidly, and carefully closed the folder without another word.
“Mr... Moretti,” I whispered, clutching my newborn daughter closer to my chest as the hospital corridor grew eerily quiet around us. “Who are you? Why did you do that? My husband—my ex-husband, whoever he is now—will challenge this. He’ll call the police. He’ll claim fraud.”
Luka turned his gaze back to me. Up close, his eyes weren’t just dark; they were piercing, sharp, and carried an infinite, hidden depth of pain and fierce loyalty.
“Let him call whoever he wants, Chloe,” Luka said, using my first name with a familiarity that sent a shiver straight down my spine. I had never told him my name. I hadn't even spoken to him before he uttered those words about my coward of a husband. “David Vance doesn’t have the legal standing, the financial leverage, or the clean hands to challenge anything I do. Not anymore.”
“How do you know my name?” I demanded, my protective instincts flaring up despite my exhaustion and physical weakness. “How do you know David’s name? I’ve never seen you in my life!”
Luka offered a faint, melancholy smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He reached out slowly, his large, calloused, ink-stained hand hovering just inches from my daughter’s tiny blanket before pulling back respectfully.
“You haven't seen me, Chloe, because the last time you were this close to me, you were three years old and hiding behind your father’s workbench while the world burned down around us,” Luka said softly.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My father’s workbench. My father had died in a suspicious corporate laboratory fire twenty-two years ago—an accident the police had quickly closed, leaving behind only ash, a broken family, and a shattered childhood.
“My father’s accident…” I breathed, my voice trembling. “What does that have to do with you?”
“Everything,” Luka replied, his jaw tightening into a hard, unyielding line. “And David Vance? He isn't just the spineless coward who walked out on you and your baby tonight because his mistress demanded it. David is a junior partner in the exact same corporate syndicate that stole your father’s life work, buried your family name, and planted the medical files marked M-17 deep inside this hospital's encrypted mainframe.”

Before I could process the sheer magnitude of his words, the distant chime of the elevator bell echoed down the hallway.
A shadow fell across the pale green hospital wall.
