Chapter 7 - THE SAFEHOUSE IN THE WOODSForty-five minutes later, the SUV turned off the paved highway onto a winding, private gravel road hidden deep within the dense pine forests north of the city.

The vehicle wound through the trees before pulling up in front of a sprawling, heavily fortified modern stone-and-timber lodge nestled against the edge of a quiet mountain lake. Floodlights illuminated the driveway, and armed, professional guards in plainclothes stood watch by the security gates.

As the SUV parked, Jax stepped out and opened our door.

“Welcome to Sanctuary, boss,” Jax said, offering a respectful nod to Luka.

Luka stepped out first, offering a steady hand to help me down from the high vehicle. I cradled my daughter carefully, stepping out into the crisp, clean mountain air. The scent of pine and rain was an overwhelming contrast to the sterile, tense atmosphere of the hospital.

“You’re safe here, Chloe,” Luka assured me, leading me up the stone steps toward the heavy oak front door. “Nobody finds this place unless we want them to. Not the local police, not David’s private security, and certainly not the corporate board.”

Inside, the lodge was magnificent—warm stone fireplaces, vaulted timber ceilings, and a fully equipped medical nursery already prepared with cribs, monitors, and blankets.

As I gently laid my sleeping daughter down in the warm, safe crib, a wave of profound exhaustion finally overcame me. I sank into a comfortable armchair by the hearth, resting my head against my hands.

Luka walked over, placing a steaming mug of herbal tea on the wooden side table beside me.

“You should rest,” he said softly, standing nearby.

“I can’t sleep, Luka,” I murmured, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. “What happens next? David thinks he’s won. The board thinks they’ve buried my father’s work forever. How do we fight a multi-billion-dollar corporation?”

Luka pulled up a chair directly opposite mine, sitting down and leaning forward, resting his forearms on his knees.

“We don't fight them like corporations, Chloe. We fight them like family,” Luka replied with absolute conviction. “Tomorrow morning, we’re going to activate the data chip hidden in your locket. We’re going to broadcast the truth about formula M-17 and the corporate embezzlement scheme straight to federal regulatory agencies and every major news outlet in the country.”

“And David?” I asked, my voice dropping to a whisper.

“David Vance,” Luka said, a cold, merciless smile touching the corners of his lips, “is going to receive a very special legal package from my team at sunrise. And by tomorrow afternoon, he’ll be the one begging us not to open the final DNA and financial audit envelope.”
