Chapter 6 - THE FATHER’S JOURNALThe pages inside the worn leather journal were filled with complex chemical formulas, handwritten project timelines, and frantic personal notes penned by my father during the final months of his life before the fatal laboratory fire.

“Where… where did you get this?” I whispered, tracing my finger over my father’s familiar handwriting.

“Your father gave it to me the night before the fire,” Luka answered quietly. His eyes stared straight ahead through the windshield, lost in memories that clearly still haunted him. “I was twenty years old back then—an orphan from the wrong side of the tracks whom your father took in, mentored, and treated like a son. He knew the corporate board was trying to steal formula M-17—a revolutionary regenerative medical compound designed to save lives, which Vance Industries wanted to weaponize and commercialize for billions.”

I looked up from the journal, my eyes wide. “David… David works for Vance Industries.”

“David didn't just work for them, Chloe. He was their golden-boy auditor sent to infiltrate your father’s research lab,” Luka revealed, the bitterness in his voice cutting like broken glass. “He courted you, married you, and wormed his way into your family home under direct orders from corporate executives to locate where your father hid the master encryption flash drive.”

“The flash drive…” I gasped. “Dad always told me to keep his old silver locket safe. He said it was just a family heirloom containing a picture of my mother.”

Luka offered a faint, knowing smile. “Open the locket, Chloe.”

With trembling fingers, I reached up to my neck where the heavy silver locket my father had given me on my eighteenth birthday still hung securely on its silver chain. I pressed the tiny hidden release latch on the side.

The locket popped open.

Inside wasn't just a tiny photograph of my mother. Tucked neatly beneath the glass bezel was a micro-sized, high-capacity titanium data chip—glistening faintly under the interior light of the SUV.

“Formula M-17,” Luka whispered. “The key to your father’s legacy, and the ultimate weapon to destroy David Vance and everyone who protected him.”
