Chapter 2 - THE DIGITAL VAULT AND THE BLOOD-RED TRACEThe silence in the dining room of the Valle Real estate was suffocating. Outside, the red and blue emergency lights flashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting an eerie, rhythmic rhythm over the shattered glass and ruined Christmas dinner.

Lead Investigator Detective Hector Vance turned his gaze slowly from Daniela to Ofelia. The mother-in-law’s face, previously flushed with staged outrage, was now completely ash-white.

“A folder named December?” Detective Vance asked, his voice steady and clinical. “What kind of folder, Mrs. Daniela?”

“Security feeds. Audio logs. Cloud archives,” Daniela replied, her voice remarkably cold despite the blood trickling down her left cheek where Ofelia’s ring had sliced her skin open. She didn't wipe the blood away. She wanted everyone in that room—every hypocritical cousin, uncle, and officer—to see what Ofelia had done to her. “Thirty days ago, I noticed discrepancies in our corporate bank accounts. I also noticed that the domestic staff was being sent home early every Tuesday and Thursday. So, I hired a private forensic security firm to wire this entire house. Every room. Every hallway. Every device connected to the local Wi-Fi.”

Lorena, Mauricio’s sister, gasped. “You spied on us in our own family home?! That’s illegal! Detective, arrest her! She violated our privacy!”

“This house, the land it sits on, the Wi-Fi router, and the bloody floorboards beneath your expensive shoes belong entirely to my client, Daniela,” interrupted a sharp voice from the doorway.

Everyone turned. Walking through the police line was Sofia Ramos, Daniela’s corporate attorney, holding an iPad and a locked briefcase. Sofia didn't look like someone who had just been woken up at 10:00 PM on Christmas Eve. She looked like an executioner ready to sign a death warrant.

“Detective Vance,” Sofia continued, handing him a verified property title and a court-stamped authorization. “My client is the sole legal owner of this property. Furthermore, the security system was installed under corporate risk-assessment protocol for Aura Architecture, a firm where Daniela is the 100% owner and CEO. Mauricio was merely an employee—a operations manager who was placed on notice three weeks ago for embezzlement.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room. The relatives, who had for years treated Daniela like an arrogant outsider who was lucky to have secured a ‘respectable man’ like Mauricio, looked at one another in total shock.

“Embezzlement?” Uncle Esteban muttered, dropping his wine glass onto the tablecloth. “Mauricio told us he bought Daniela her shares for her birthday!”

“Mauricio couldn't buy a pair of socks without requesting an advance on his allowance,” Sofia sneered softly.

Detective Vance waved his hand toward the forensic technician. “Get the server access. Pull up the December folder. I want every frame of video from 6:00 PM tonight until the ambulance was called.”

Ofelia suddenly took a step backward, clutching her throat. “Oh, my heart... I... I can't breathe! Lorena, my medicine! My chest is collapsing!” She feigned a swoon, attempting to fall toward the velvet sofa.

“Don’t touch her, Lorena,” Vance commanded instantly. “Forensics, check that drawer in the master suite first. Let's see what medication Ofelia actually keeps locked away.”

Two officers moved quickly toward the stairs. Ofelia’s eyes darted wildly toward the kitchen door. She made a sudden, desperate move to reach into her cardigan pocket, but Daniela stepped straight into her path, blocking her completely.

“Where are you going, Ofelia?” Daniela whispered, her voice low enough that only her mother-in-law could hear. “You haven't even asked which hospital they took Mauricio to. Isn't that what a loving mother does?”

“You viper,” Ofelia hissed, her fake tears vanishing, replaced by pure malice. “You think you’re so smart because you have money. But Mauricio is my blood. This family will tear you apart!”

“Your blood is currently dying in an ICU because you over-dosed him, Ofelia,” Daniela replied, stepping closer. “The only question left is: did you mean to poison him, or were you aiming for me?”

Before Ofelia could answer, one of the officers returned down the stairs holding a clear evidence bag. Inside was a small, black velvet box, and within it sat an unlabeled amber glass bottle containing identical wine-colored capsules—half of which were missing.

“Detective,” the officer reported. “We found this hidden inside a false bottom of the mother-in-law's nightstand. And there's something else.”

The officer produced a second object: a custom glass-cutting needle and a tiny rubber syringe.

The room went deathly silent. The illusion of a tragic family medical emergency vanished completely. What remained was the undeniable scent of a premeditated murder attempt.

Detective Vance looked at Daniela, then at Ofelia, and finally at the forensic technician who was loading the security footage onto a portable monitor.

“Play the footage from 7:15 PM,” Vance ordered. “Let’s see who poured the wine.”
