Chapter 7 - THE KINGPIN'S CHESSBOARDThe penthouse suit of the Vane Financial Tower overlooked the skyline of the capital city. Rain streamed down the massive glass walls as Julian Vane—a silver-haired, distinguished man in his early sixties—poured two glasses of thirty-year-old Scotch.

“I must admit, Daniela,” Julian said smoothly, turning around and offering her a glass. “I didn't expect to see you here on Christmas evening. I assumed you’d be resting after the... unfortunate events at your home.”

Daniela didn't take the glass. She stood in the middle of his luxurious office, her arms crossed over her ivory coat.

“Mauricio confessed,” Daniela said directly.

Julian didn't flinch. He walked over to his executive desk, took a slow sip of his Scotch, and sat down in his leather armchair.

“Mauricio was a weak man,” Julian said casually, as if talking about bad weather. “A foolish boy who thought he could wear a king's crown just because he slept in the king's bed. I knew he would fail the moment he decided to use his mother for a messy domestic murder.”

“You set him up to fail,” Daniela realized instantly. “You knew I had the house wired. You wanted Mauricio to get caught.”

Julian smiled—a warm, paternal smile that chilled Daniela to her very core.

“Of course I did, my dear,” Julian said softly. “If Mauricio had succeeded in killing you, the police would have investigated him endlessly. He was stupid, loud, and sloppy. He would have dragged my name into the dirt within a week. But by letting him try—and fail—you destroyed him for me.”

Daniela felt a sudden cold chill run down her spine. “You used me to liquidate Mauricio.”

“I used both of you,” Julian corrected gently. “Mauricio had outlived his usefulness. He owed $20 million to my associates in Panama. By placing him at the center of a federal investigation, his assets—and his debts—are seized and wiped clean. And now that he is in prison, you are the sole, undisputed owner of Aura Architecture again.”

“And you think I’m going to let you use my firm for your cartel logistics?” Daniela sneered, stepping closer to his desk. “I have enough evidence to put you away for the rest of your life, Julian!”

Julian laughed—a deep, booming laugh that echoed off the marble walls.

“Evidence? What evidence, Daniela?” Julian unlocked his top desk drawer and pulled out a single, golden USB drive. “The video footage from your house? Mauricio’s bank statements? They all point to him, not me. My name appears nowhere on those shell company documents. I am completely invisible.”

He set the USB drive on the desk between them.

“Inside this drive,” Julian continued, “is the contract for the expansion of the Federal Airport infrastructure—a $300 million deal. Sign the partnership agreement with my holding company, Daniela, and you become the richest architect in Latin America. Refuse... and the evidence linking you to Mauricio’s cartel transactions will magically appear on Detective Vance’s desk tomorrow morning.”

“You’re blackmailing me,” Daniela said, her eyes narrowing.

“I’m offering you a choice,” Julian replied, his voice hardening into steel. “You can either be my partner... or you can be Mauricio’s cellmate. You have until midnight to sign.”

Daniela looked at the golden USB drive, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had mentored her, guided her, and ultimately built a trap around her whole life.

She slowly reached out her hand and picked up the USB drive.

“You always told me,” Daniela said softly, sliding the drive into her pocket, “that in business, you should never make a decision on an empty stomach.”

Julian blinked, surprised by her sudden shift in demeanor. “What?”

Daniela reached into her purse, pulled out a small, exquisite glass bottle of vintage Cabernet Sauvignon—the exact same vintage that had been served at her ruined Christmas Eve dinner—and set it on his desk.

“A drink to celebrate our new partnership, Julian?” Daniela asked, a faint, mysterious smile appearing on her face.
