Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO PROOF AND THE SECOND SNAREThe forensic technician plugged the encrypted drive into his rugged laptop. A high-definition, night-vision video feed illuminated the dim room, reflecting off the faces of eighteen terrified family members.

The timestamp on the lower right corner read: DECEMBER 24 - 19:12:04.

The camera angle was from a hidden lens concealed inside the frame of a painting overlooking the dining table and the adjoining bar cart.

On the screen, Daniela was seen coming out of the kitchen holding a tray of food. She set it down and walked toward the patio to adjust the exterior heaters.

The moment Daniela left the frame, a figure stepped out from behind the mahogany partition near the cellar.

It was Lorena.

The crowd gasped. Lorena’s face drained of color as she instinctively backed into a corner. “That’s... that’s taken out of context! I was just getting water!”

“Shut up and watch,” Vance barked.

On the high-resolution video, Lorena didn't touch water. Instead, she slipped a small paper envelope out of her sleeve and handed it to Ofelia, who was standing right behind her near the bar cart. Ofelia took the envelope, pulled out a wine-colored capsule, pulled it apart with gloved hands, and poured the pale powder directly into the decanter of vintage Cabernet Sauvignon—the very decanter Daniela had opened for Mauricio.

Then came the chilling part.

On the screen, Ofelia looked directly up at the hidden camera—not because she knew it was there, but because she was checking the ceiling for standard smoke detectors. Her expression was cold, calculated, and devoid of any humanity.

“My God,” Uncle Esteban gasped, covering his mouth. “You... you poisoned Mauricio?”

“No!” Ofelia shrieked, backing toward the wall. “No! It wasn't for Mauricio! It was for her!” She pointed a trembling, spotted finger straight at Daniela. “That glass was supposed to be Daniela’s! Mauricio wasn't supposed to drink from that decanter! He was supposed to toast her, hand her the glass, and let her drink!”

The room exploded into chaos. Relatives began shouting over one another.

“You tried to murder Daniela in front of us?!” “What about Mauricio?! He drank it!” “You monster!”

Daniela didn't shout. She didn't cry. She stood motionless, watching the video play out to its horrific conclusion. On screen, Mauricio had spontaneously grabbed the decanter himself to pour a fresh glass to make his boastful toast, completely unaware that his own mother had laced the bottle with lethal levels of digitalis compound.

“So,” Daniela said softly, her voice piercing through the frantic noise of the room. “The plan was to kill me tonight. You thought that if I died of a ‘sudden cardiac arrest’ during Christmas dinner, Mauricio would inherit my firm, my properties, my wealth, and my insurance policies.”

Sofia, Daniela’s lawyer, pulled out a thick document from her briefcase and slapped it onto the table with a loud THUD.

“And here is the missing piece of the puzzle,” Sofia announced, opening the file. “Three days ago, Mauricio signed an amendment to his personal life insurance policy. A policy worth $5 million. But he didn't make his mother or sister the beneficiaries.”

Ofelia’s eyes went wide. “What do you mean? He promised me! He said if anything happened to Daniela, the family trust would receive—”

“He lied to you, Ofelia,” Daniela interrupted, a bitter smile breaking through her blood-stained cheek. “Mauricio knew you and Lorena were desperate. He knew about the loan sharks threatening to break Lorena’s legs over her gambling debts. So he played you. He let you think you were planning my murder, while he secretly changed the beneficiary of his own $10 million policy... to his secret mistress in Miami.”

Ofelia froze. Her jaw dropped. “What... mist-mistress?”

“Mauricio wasn't planning to stay with me,” Daniela revealed, pulling her phone from her pocket and displaying a set of flight tickets and forged passports. “He was planning to let you kill me, take the money, frame you for my murder using the security footage he thought he was controlling, and fly to Florida on December 26th with a woman named Vanessa.”

The betrayal was total. It wasn't just a conspiracy against Daniela; it was a labyrinth of snakes eating snakes.

Ofelia fell to her knees for real this time, not acting, but broken by the sudden realization that her beloved son had used her as a disposable hitman.

“No... no, Mauricio wouldn't...” Ofelia sobbed, clutching her head. “My boy... my baby boy...”

“Detective Vance,” Daniela said coldly. “I want Ofelia and Lorena arrested for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.”

Vance nodded to his officers. “Cuff them both.”

As the steel handcuffs clicked around Ofelia’s and Lorena’s wrists, Daniela’s phone began to vibrate violently in her hand.

It was a call from the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Daniela answered, putting it on speakerphone so the entire room could hear.

“Mrs. Daniela?” a panicked doctor’s voice came through the speaker. “We have an emergency. Your husband, Mauricio, has just regained consciousness...”

Daniela held her breath. “And?”

“He isn't in cardiac arrest anymore, Mrs. Daniela,” the doctor said, his voice trembling. “The toxicology report just came back. It wasn't digitalis that poisoned him. It was a rare neurotoxin. And... he just whispered his first words to the head nurse.”

“What did he say?” Vance demanded, leaning toward the phone.

The doctor paused before answering. “He said... 'Tell Daniela the thirty days are over. The real game starts now.'”
