Chapter 1

"Stay in the back, and please don't talk to anyone... That dress looks like you bought it at a flea market."

Ricardo spat the words under his breath just before walking through the enormous glass doors of the grand ballroom at an exclusive hotel in Polanco, Mexico City. He looked at Mariana, his wife, as though she were a grease stain threatening to ruin the most important night of his career.

Mariana lowered her eyes to her navy-blue dress. She had designed the pattern herself and sewn every single hem over the course of three long weeks, stealing hours from the early morning after coming home exhausted from her own job and cooking Ricardo dinner—a meal he rarely bothered to appreciate.

Her dress didn't carry the label of a famous European designer, nor did it cost the equivalent of three months' rent in Mexico City. But it had been made with her own hands, with a dignity her husband was incapable of seeing.

Ricardo, meanwhile, looked flawless. He wore a custom-tailored suit and a silk tie purchased with money from a bank account he was convinced Mariana knew nothing about.

"Okay," she replied quietly.

He smiled, puffing out his chest with satisfaction. This was exactly how he preferred her—silent, obedient, and invisible.

That evening, Ricardo's company was celebrating a landmark event: its majority acquisition by Alejandro Valdés, one of Mexico's wealthiest and most influential businessmen, a Monterrey-born billionaire famous for his ruthless business style.

For the past two weeks, Ricardo had practiced introducing himself to Valdés in front of the bathroom mirror.

"If Valdés notices me tonight, I'll get the regional director position without a second thought," he'd repeated endlessly.

Inside, the ballroom was dazzling. Massive crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead. Waiters circulated with trays of champagne and artisanal mezcal. Executives exchanged loud, rehearsed laughter, while society women discreetly judged who was wearing genuine jewelry and who was only pretending.

Suddenly, Paola, Ricardo's personal assistant, appeared.

She wore a silver dress that fit like a second skin and slipped naturally onto Ricardo's arm. She straightened his suit jacket with an intimacy no employee should display toward a married man.

"Ricardo, the executives are waiting for you," she purred.

Then her eyes drifted toward Mariana, and she let out a patronizing sigh.

"Oh... I see your wife came too."

The way she said "wife" dripped with mockery.

Ricardo chuckled as he adjusted his tie.

"I only brought her for appearances."

The words struck Mariana like a punch to the chest, but she kept her chin high.

For twelve years, she had been the brilliant mind working behind the scenes. She had reviewed complex contracts Ricardo couldn't understand, rewritten reports he proudly presented as his own, and caught tax errors that could easily have landed him in prison.

Yet to everyone else, she was merely the simple little wife—the one who "helped him with the math."

What Ricardo, blinded by his arrogance and sexism, never realized was that Mariana had a photographic memory for numbers.

She remembered figures far better than she remembered insults.

Standing quietly in a corner, she watched him perform.

Ricardo laughed.

He shook hands.

He rested his hand on Paola's waist.

He gave speeches about loyalty and corporate values.

But Mariana knew the truth.

She knew every one of the 25 suspicious bank transfers.

The receipts from four luxury hotels on the Riviera Maya.

The travel expenses inflated by 300 percent.

The 18 fake invoices.

And above all, she knew about the shell company registered under the name P&R Consultants.

Paola and Ricardo.

Suddenly, the murmuring throughout the ballroom died away.

The grand double doors swung open.

Alejandro Valdés entered with confident strides.

His silver hair gleamed beneath the lights. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, and his commanding presence was so overwhelming that everyone in the room instinctively stood a little straighter.

Desperate to make an impression, Ricardo practically rushed toward him.

"Mr. Valdés, I'm Ricardo Salazar. It's a true honor—"

But Alejandro walked right past him, leaving Ricardo standing there with his hand awkwardly extended.

At first, Mariana assumed the billionaire was looking at someone behind her.

He wasn't.

His dark, intense eyes were fixed directly on her face.

The most feared businessman in Mexico walked slowly toward Mariana, as though each step stole his breath.

By the time he stopped in front of her, all 200 guests in the ballroom had fallen into complete silence.

Alejandro's hand trembled visibly as he gently took hers.

"I've searched for you across heaven and earth for thirty years," he whispered, his voice breaking with emotion.

Mariana felt the blood drain from her face.

Three meters away, Ricardo dropped his crystal wine glass.

It shattered across the marble floor.

Ignoring the noise without taking his eyes off the woman in the navy-blue dress, Alejandro softly added:

"Mariana... I still love you."

May you like

At that very moment, Ricardo realized—with terror rising in his throat—that the woman he had ordered to hide was the very treasure the most powerful man in the room had come to reclaim.

And no one in that ballroom had the slightest idea of the storm that was about to unfold...
