Chapter 3 - The Photographic Memory and the Public Execution

The silence returned instantly, heavy and toxic.
Ricardo saw his life flashing before his eyes. Panic seized his brain. He pushed past the bodyguards, stumbling forward onto his knees near Alejandro and Mariana.
"Mariana! Darling!" Ricardo cried out, his voice dripping with pathetic desperation. "Tell him! Tell Mr. Valdés how much we love each other! I bought you that dress! I always knew you were special! Mr. Valdés, please, I am her husband! What’s hers is mine! I have managed her life for twelve years!"
Mariana looked down at the man groveling at her feet. For twelve years, she had believed his lies. She had believed she was ugly, talentless, and lucky that a handsome executive like him had chosen her. She had endured his cruel comments, his emotional coldness, and his financial control.
Slowly, Mariana pulled her hand from Alejandro’s grip and stepped forward.
"You didn't buy this dress, Ricardo," Mariana said, her voice clear, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "I bought the fabric with the 200 pesos I saved from skipping lunch for two weeks."
"Mariana, please—"
"And you don't love me," she continued, her eyes flashing with a sharp, brilliant intelligence that Ricardo had never seen before. "You loved my brain. You loved that I wrote your quarterly reports. You loved that I audited your books so you wouldn't get caught."
Ricardo’s face drained of all color. "Mariana, keep quiet! Not here!"
"Why not here?" Mariana turned to Alejandro and the board of directors. "Mr. Valdés, as the new majority owner, you should know that this company has been leaking millions of dollars over the last three years."
"What are you talking about?!" Ricardo screamed, scrambling to his feet. "She’s insane! She’s a bitter, uneducated housewife who knows nothing about finance!"
Mariana smiled softly. It was a cold, beautiful smile.
"I have a photographic memory, Ricardo. You thought I was just filing your paper receipts, but I memorized every digit."
Mariana faced the audience and began speaking in a steady, rapid-fire tone:
"Account number 4409 at Banco Nacional: On March 14th, a wire transfer of $120,000 to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under 'P&R Consultants.' On June 22nd, $350,000 transferred for 'software development' that never existed. On August 10th, four luxury suites at the St. Regis Riviera Maya charged as 'client entertainment'—registered under the names Ricardo Salazar and Paola Gomez."
The crowd began gasping. Paola’s hands began to shake violently.
"Stop her! Somebody shut her up!" Paola shrieked, lunging toward Mariana with her acrylic nails aimed at Mariana’s face.
BAM!
Before Paola could touch Mariana, two female security officers tackled Paola to the polished marble floor, pinning her arms behind her back.
Mariana didn't even flinch. She kept reciting from her mental ledger:
"Total fake invoices: 18. Total embezzled funds over 36 months: $14,250,000 USD. Registered tax fraud under shell company P&R Consultants—P for Paola, R for Ricardo."
Alejandro Valdés raised an eyebrow, a cruel, satisfied smirk appearing on his face. He pulled out his satellite phone, pressed a single button, and put it on speaker.
"Federal Prosecutor's Office," a booming voice answered over the speaker. "Mr. Valdés, federal agents and financial crime investigators are waiting outside the hotel."

"Send them in," Alejandro said smoothly. "We have the suspects, the full evidence ledger, and the confession right here."
The heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open. A dozen federal police officers in tactical gear streamed into the room, handcuffs swinging from their belts.
