Chapter 2 - The Frozen Ballroom and the 30-Year Vow

The sharp, metallic echo of Ricardo’s shattered wine glass rang out across the silent ballroom like a gunshot. Champagne bled into the white marble floor, but not a single person moved. The powerful executives, the diamond-draped high-society ladies, and the hovering waiters stood frozen, their breath hitched in their throats.
Ricardo’s jaw dropped so low it looked dislocated. Beside him, Paola’s silver dress seemed to lose all its luster as her face flushed crimson with sheer embarrassment and confusion.
"M-Mr. Valdés..." Ricardo stammered, his voice cracking like a terrified teenager's. "I... I think there’s been a mistake. That’s just my wife. She’s... she’s nobody. She doesn't belong here—"
Alejandro Valdés didn't even turn his head. Without taking his piercing, dark eyes off Mariana, the billionaire slowly raised one hand. Four muscular bodyguards in tailored black suits stepped forward like shadows.
"Silence him," Alejandro commanded, his deep voice slicing through the room like a silver blade. "If that man speaks another word in my presence, throw him out into the street."
Two bodyguards immediately moved, stepping into Ricardo’s physical space with imposing weight. Ricardo swallowed hard, forced to shut his mouth, his eyes bulging in utter panic.
Alejandro turned his full attention back to Mariana. His expression softened from ruthless titan to a man looking at a miracle. He gently cupped her right hand with both of his, entirely ignoring the simple navy-blue cotton dress that Ricardo had called "flea market trash."
"Mariana..." Alejandro murmured, his thumb gently brushing over the calluses on her fingertips—calluses formed from twelve years of late-night sewing, hand-washing Ricardo’s clothes, and typing out his corporate reports. "Look at me. Please."
Mariana felt her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her voice trembled. "Mr. Valdés... I don't understand. We have never met before. I am thirty-two years old... Thirty years ago, I was only two."
A sad, beautiful smile touched the billionaire's lips. Tears glistened in his eyes.
"You don't remember," Alejandro whispered softly. "You were too young when the fire destroyed your family's estate in Monterrey. But I remember. I was eighteen years old when your father, Don Mateo Garza—the greatest mentor and savior I ever had—saved my life from bankruptcy. Before he died in that tragic accident, he made me swear a holy oath. He handed me a portrait of his baby daughter and her mother, and made me promise that if anything ever happened to him, I would find you, protect you, and return what was rightfully yours."
A collective gasp echoed across the ballroom.
Garza.
The older executives in the room suddenly turned pale. The Garza family had been the undisputed monarchs of Mexico’s steel and shipping empire before their sudden collapse and disappearance thirty years ago.
Alejandro continued, his voice echoing loudly so every snob in the room heard every word: "For three decades, I built an empire for one single purpose: to gain enough power and resources to track down Don Mateo's lost daughter. And tonight... my search is over."
Alejandro looked down at Mariana’s navy-blue dress and touched the hem with reverence. "This pattern... this hand-stitched embroidery. It is the exact crest of the Garza house. Your mother taught you that stitch, didn't she?"
Mariana’s eyes welled with tears. "My mother... she always told me never to forget how to sew this pattern. She said it was our family’s secret seal."
"It is," Alejandro said proudly. He turned around, facing the entire room of 200 stunned elite guests. He took Mariana’s hand and raised it high.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Tonight was supposed to be the celebration of Valdés Enterprises acquiring this company. But plans have changed. Effective immediately, 51% of all shares of this conglomerate—and my entire legacy—belong to Mariana Garza!"
The room exploded into stunned murmurs.
Ricardo felt the floor beneath him tilt. 51 percent? Mariana?! The quiet, obedient woman who washed his socks and begged for grocery money was now the majority owner of the very company he worked for!
"No! This is insane!" Paola shrieked, forgetting her place. "She’s a nobody! She’s just a house-wife who spends all day doing nothing! She doesn't even have a high-fashion dress!"

Alejandro’s eyes turned to ice as he locked sight on Paola.
"Her dress," Alejandro stated coldly, "is priceless. Unlike your loyalty, Miss Paola."
