📜 CHAPTER 1: The 30-Million Peso Betrayal

The delivery room at the private Makati hospital smelled of sterile alcohol and betrayal.
Inside lay Bianca Reyes—the woman I had loved like a sister for over a decade. Weak, sweaty, but glowing with a triumphant smirk, she cradled a newborn baby. Standing over her was Adrian Villareal. My husband.
We had been married for three years today. It was our anniversary. Yet, I couldn’t remember the last time Adrian had looked at me. But right now? He was touching the baby’s tiny cheek with a shocking, breathless tenderness.
"Lucia..." Bianca called out weakly, ensuring her voice carried across the room. "I’m sorry. I never planned to get pregnant either. Please... just let Adrian be on the birth certificate. Let the baby carry his family name."
As she reached out, the hospital lights caught the ring on her finger. A massive, flawless Colombian emerald.
My heart froze. I recognized it instantly. Adrian had bought that exact ring at a Singapore auction for nearly thirty million pesos. I looked down at my own hand. My wedding band was a plain, scratchy stainless-steel ring he had bought from a mall kiosk for less than five hundred pesos.
The nurse approached with the birth certificate clipboard. "Father’s name?" she asked.
Before Adrian could speak, I snatched the clipboard. "Wait," I said, my voice dead calm. "Let’s do a DNA test first."
The warmth drained from Adrian’s face. "What did you say?" he hissed, stepping toward me. "Lucia dela Cruz, have you lost your mind?"
Whenever he used my full name, it meant he wanted me to submit. For three years, I had stayed silent. When my mother-in-law called me a barren, useless wife, I said nothing. When Adrian disappeared for days, I kept quiet. I was only married to him because it was his late grandmother Doña Elena’s dying wish. I had been her caregiver; she loved me like a daughter. On our wedding night, Adrian had told me: “We live separately. Don’t bother me.”
He thought I was weak. He thought I would swallow this final humiliation.
"If you are so certain the baby is yours, Adrian, why are you afraid of a test?" I asked.
"It isn't necessary! He is my son!" Adrian shouted.
I didn't argue. I simply pulled out my phone and pressed speaker. "Atty. Salazar, prepare the petition for a court-ordered paternity test. And bring the divorce settlement."

The room went dead silent. Bianca’s eyes widened in genuine panic. Adrian looked as if I had just slapped him. "Divorce?" he repeated, stunned.
I smiled. "Isn't this what you wanted?"
